New York Mets starter Matt Harvey made his second straight start of the Spring against the Miami Marlins on Thursday afternoon.  In his third overall Grapefruit League outing Harvey managed to improve upon what ‘most’ already considered an impressive last performance.  I say ‘most’ because this past Saturday the 23-year-0ld righty indicated he was not happy with his outing after allowing just one run over 2 2/3 innings of work while striking out four.  This afternoon he showed that the lofty expectations he sets for himself are hardly unfounded as the promising young hurler held the Marlins without a hit or a walk while striking out five through 4 1/3 innings. Harvey is coming off an impressive rookie campaign that saw him strikeout over a batter an inning while recording a 2.73 ERA in 10 starts.  The K’s keep coming for Harvey as he enters his sophomore campaign and the former North Carolina Tarheel now has 12 Spring strikeouts in his three starts, putting him just one strikeout behind the likes of Washington Nationals ace Stephen Strasburg for a share of the Spring lead (13).  It’s seriously hard not to get excited every single time Matt Harvey is scheduled to pitch, even if it is ‘just Spring Training’. Image by Michael G. Baron I’ll be honest, at this point #33 is the primary reason I am looking forward to the New York Mets 2013 season and when I fly up to New York to catch a game I’ll be sure to make certain it will be on a day that he’s scheduled to take the mound.  For a young pitcher he already mixes up his pitches and changes speeds so well, constantly keeping hitters off balance, as evidenced by the numerous check swing outs he induced today.   I highly recommend checking out the highlights of Harvey’s outing by clicking here if you weren’t able to see him throw live.  I you’re a Mets fan you won’t be disappointed, if you’re a Marlins fan, well that’s a different story all together.
