According to multiple reports, the New York Mets will promote highly regarded pitching prospect, Matt Harvey. Harvey, the Mets’ seventh overall pick in the first-round of the 2010 First-Year Player Draft, will be on the taxi squad tomorrow, activated Tuesday, and start Thursday in Arizona versus the Diamondbacks. The move was announced after another disappointing loss on Sunday afternoon just hours after designating Miguel Batista for assignment  — who’s spot Harvey will occupy in the rotation:

According to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York, placing Harvey on the taxi squad allows him to toss a bullpen session in front of Dan Warthen prior to Thursday’s start:

So take that feeble Saturday effort (5 IP, 6 ER) and bury it, Terry Collins said, according to Mike Puma of the New York Post.

“Matt pitched (Saturday), didn’t pitch very good but he has been pitching good. One of those situations, Wally (Buffalo manager) thought, where his mind was in New York and not necessarily in Buffalo, which I totally understand completely…You’ve got to throw those starts out. Part of the whole thing is being here in New York where everything’s a story.”

This is a move all Mets fans had been waiting for.  As the team continues is downward second half spiral — losing nine of their last ten while dropping 8 1/2 games behind the NL East leading Nationals –  all we can hope is the promotion of Harvey is the spark this team needs.  While I was in favor of promoting him last Saturday versus the Dodgers, I believe allowing him to start in Arizona, away from the NY hoopla, is the right move.

But, ss we fans get set to see the Matt Harvey era begin Thursday night, I believe Rich Coutinho of WFAN.com makes an excellent point in this tweet:

Over his Minor League career, Harvey is 20-10 with a 3.48 ERA, including 7-5 with a 3.68 ERA and 112 strikeouts over 110 innings for Triple-A Buffalo this year:
