Boston Red Sox first baseman Mauro Gomez was charged with an error in Friday night's game against the Tampa Bay Rays when a throw from third base went through the webbing of his glove.

Your browser does not support iframes.

It happened in the bottom of the first inning on a grounder to third by Rays batter B.J. Upton. The throw from third baseman Will Middlebrooks was a bit low, but Gomez would have made the play without the glove malfunction.

Fortunately the Rays did not score in the inning, so the defective glove did not hurt the Red Sox, but the equipment manager will probably be busy this weekend checking the gloves of all the players. The Red Sox are dealing with enough issues this season without having to worry about their gloves falling apart.

Mauro Gomez Optioned To Pawtucket After Impressive Hitting Stretch That Came With Subpar Defense

As the Red Sox regain reinforcements, Mauro Gomez was the latest roster casualty to suffer the consequences. Before Saturday's game against the Rays, the team announced that they had activated pitcher Clay Buchholz from the disabled list and optioned Gomez back to Pawtucket to clear up room on the 25-man roster. Since his promotion on July 4, Gomez made six starts for the Red...

Adrian Gonzalez Scratched From Red Sox Lineup, Jacoby Ellsbury to Bat Leadoff in Return

It's been 79 games since Jacoby Ellsbury last suited up for the Red Sox, but his return to the Boston lineup should have a big impact on the offenses inconsistent first half. Ellsbury will leadoff and start in center field for the Sox, as Boston enters Tampa Bay to take on the AL East rival Rays in search of a more successful second half to the season. Daniel Nava, who has led...

Juan Carlos Linares Revels in Healthy Season, Looks to Showcase Power With PawSox

PAWTUCKET, R.I. –– Upon signing with the Red Sox, Juan Carlos Linares was expected to contribute quickly in the majors. Instead, injuries derailed the dream for now. Last season, Linares –– then in Triple-A –– suffered torn ligaments in his ankle, a setback that sidelined him for the rest of the 2011 season. After being promoted to Triple-A last month, he's eager...

Dustin Pedroia Progressing Well in Recovery From Thumb Injury, Not Wearing a Cast Anymore (Video)

With the return of Jacoby Ellsbury and Will Middlebrooks to the lineup on Friday night, and the impending return of Carl Crawford, all that remains for the Red Sox to have their ideal lineup together is for their second baseman to be healthy. And it certainly appears that Dustin Pedroia is well on his way to being just that. The former MVP is now out of the cast he had been wearing...

Adrian Gonzalez Sidelined With Back Stiffness, Hopes to Avoid Stint on the Disabled List

For the second straight game, Adrian Gonzalez is out of the lineup. But it's not because of the illness that forced him to exit last Sunday's game against the Yankees. The Red Sox first baseman is battling back stiffness and doesn't want to re-aggravate the injury. NESN's Jenny Dell reports that Gonzalez's back locked up as he bent down to greet a young child...

Red Sox Still Potential Buyers as Trade Deadline Nears (Video)

The addition of a second wild card in each league has impacted not only the pennant race, but also the market as the trade deadline nears. With 21 teams within five games of a playoff spot after the All-Star break, the identities of the buyers and sellers are substantially murkier as baseball enters the second half than they have been in the past. The Red Sox, sitting at 43-43, historically...

Red Sox Start Second Half In Tampa Against The Rays

Remember this picture? Yeah, me too. On a completely fluke play at second base during the Red Sox home opener, Jacoby Ellsbury dislocated his shoulder when Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Reid Brignac fell on top of Ells while attempting to turn a double play. Ellsbury has not played a game in the Majors since [...]
