One of the Colorado Rockies' original owners, Jerry McMorris, has died, the team announced in a statement.
The team said that McMorris died Tuesday in Denver of cancer. He was 71.
McMorris was part of a group that purchased a controlling interest in the club in 1992 and he served as chairman, president and CEO of the team until 2001. He was part of the team's ownership group until 2005.
Rockies owner and CEO Dick Monfort said in a statement: ''I believe it is fair to say without the efforts of Jerry, there may have never been Major League Baseball in Denver.''

The Colorado Rockies managed to win a game Wednesday, besting the San Diego Padres 6-2 and snapping a five game losing streak. It was an important win even this early in the year as the Rockies face a stretch that has them on the road for another week and six games.
The Colorado Rockies enter Wednesday last in the National League in team ERA and with just one more victory (12) than the San Diego Padres (11). Starting pitching has been the Rockies downfall as injuries and ineffectiveness have kept the third best offense in the N.L. from notching more wins.
