Fox Sports South:
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. Kris Medlen stepped off the elevator onto the mezzanine level of Champions Stadium, where a few of his Braves teammates were waiting in line to be shuffled around for photo day.
A rack of jerseys and a table of hats were waiting as the teams public relations staff helped each player find their size; the Braves around Medlen were each pulling on their jerseys. The right-hander could only laugh when he was told his wasnt there.
With only a few jerseys on hand, players were forced to wear whoevers shirt was their size and Medlens was currently on the back of Tyler Pastornicky. He immediately went in search of the young utility player.
He was in the back of the line and I asked some of the younger guys if he could go ahead and go, hes wearing my jersey, Medlen said. Plus, they wanted me to wear our strength coachs (Phil Falco) jersey and thats four sizes too big on me.
His No. 54 jersey finally in hand, Medlen pulled it on as the staff went over his commitmen...
BEST OF MAXIM
THAT DIDN'T TAKE LONG
The Atlanta Braves are not wasting any time paying tribute to Chipper Jones as it has been announced the team will retire his No. 10 jersey on June 28.
Recently, we posted a head-to-head comparison of the Braves’ and Nats’ probable lineups, featuring statistical projections from Bill James. Missing from that post, we later felt, was comparison of the 2012 performances of each member of the respective lineups. With that in mind, here is that comparison.
2012 performance of current Braves lineup:
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. Craig Kimbrel keeps baseballs from key moments in his career. Now hes adding a much smaller ball to his collection.
The Braves All-Star closer hit his first-ever hole-in-one on the ChampionsGate Golf Club during Mondays Tim Hudson-Chipper Jones Birdies and Baseball charity tournament.
Kimbrel, using a four-iron, hit the ball 180 yards into the wind on the...
Tweet Chipper Jones made his debut for the Atlanta Braves in 1993. He then went on to play 18 full seasons for the Braves. Jones batted .303 in his career with Braves, hit 468 home runs and drove in 1623 runs. He was also an eight-time All-Star and the National League MVP in 1999. Jones [...]
It’s that time of the year when we take stock of the Atlanta Braves organization and analyze the top prospects. For the next few weeks, we will profile our top-30 prospect list in groups of five. Here are those who are ranked in the 11-15 range.
NL East week rolls along with Atlanta Braves day. The Braves won the top NL Wild Card spot last season before getting eliminated in the wild card playoff game by the Cardinals, in part due to a sketchy infield fly call. Atlanta dramatically retooled their outfield this winter, and will be going into 2013 as one of the game's most changed teams.
Yesterday was Phillies day...
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. As a practical matter, Gerald Laird was indirectly responsible for Moneyball, the best-selling book (and Oscar-nominated movie of the same name) chronicling the underdog story of the 2002 Oakland Athletics.
Here's the scoop:
Fifteen years ago and fresh out of high school (southern California), Laird subjectively had more physical upside than future luminaries...

Justin Upton was almost traded twice before coming to the Braves
The Arizona Diamondbacks apparently tried to trade Justin Upton for two and a half years, including a deal with the Mariners that Upton vetoed. Another deal involving Upton to an American League team was close, but fell through.
The deal with the Mariners reportedly included minor league shortstop Nick Franklin, pitching...
LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. Here's a postcard to commemorate Day 5 of FOXSportsSouth.com's embedded coverage from Braves camp, a day that started with an honor for Chipper Jones and ended with some pitcher-fueled clarity for the first five exhibition games.
Four Workout Observations
1. Catching prospect Christian Bethancourt might have the most raw power of any Braves hitter...
Tony Gonzalez could learn from Chipper Jones
When Chipper Jones retired he did it the right way. He made his decision prior to his last season, had the press conference to let everyone know his intentions, then he played his last season and accepted the accolades and answered all the questions.
The Braves organization benefited by Jones’ early decision. They were able to sell...
