Melky Cabrera was in the middle of an MVP-type season for the San Francisco Giants in 2012, when it was revealed that he tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance. He was suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball on August 15. Cabrera has now served that suspension and was reinstated to the Giants’ 40-man roster on Friday, which means he is technically eligible to play in the National League Championship Series against the St. Louis Cardinals. But Bobby Evans, San Francisco’s vice president of baseball operations, has said that Cabrera’s status remains unchanged and he will not play in the postseason. On September 27, the Giants announced that Cabrera would not be added to the team’s postseason roster for any round. They are apparently sticking to their guns on this issue. Cabrera was the MVP of this year’s All-Star Game, and was hitting .346, with 11 home runs and 60 RBI at the time of his suspension. He was having a monster season. It would have been easy for the Giants to bring him back and claim that he had served his time and therefore it was fair game to use him. Instead, they are moving forward without the 28-year-old outfielder. I’m definitely not a fan of the San Francisco Giants. That said, I respect the fact that they are willing to sit Cabrera for the rest of the season because of the stain he has put on the game and on their organization.
