Three Of A Kind For National League MVP; Is It In The Cards?

The St. Louis Cardinals through the first 100 games of the 2013 season have the best record in Major League Baseball, and it is in large part due to the contributions from a trio of players-Yadier Molina, Allen Craig, and Matt Carpenter. Molina has been the early pick of many baseball pundits for National League MVP, and he has certainly earned the accolades he has thus far received...

St. Louis Cardinals: Carlos Beltran’s power outage is cause for concern

St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny kept All-star right fielder Carlos Beltran out of the lineup for Thursday night’s 4-1 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. Matheny has been doing this all season long. He has sat Beltran often and the 36 year old has often responded. Beltran put up a huge first half of the season, much like he did in 2012, and the Cardinals are trying...

Cards' RISP numbers are so good, they're ridiculous

ST. LOUIS -- The numbers the Cardinals are putting up with runners in scoring position have become ridiculous. Ridiculously good, that is. Like this good: At .340, the Cardinals' batting average with RISP leads the majors by 52 points. It's 80 points better than any other NL team. Their .411 on-base percentage is the majors' best by 46 points. If the Cardinals keep...

Cardinals' Gast has season-ending shoulder surgery

ATLANTA -- St. Louis left-hander John Gast is expected to be ready to pitch in eight to 12 months following season-ending surgery on his left shoulder. Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak said in a statement on Friday that more will be known about Gast's recovery period when the team evaluates his rehabilitation in the next few weeks. Gast was 2-0 with a 5.11 ERA in three...

Cardinals' Matt Holliday returns; is he okay?

Matt Holliday was activated from the 15-day disabled list on Saturday according to Jenifer Langosch of MLB.com after passing all the necessary running tests. He started against the Braves. And it really seemed like he wasn't the same guy. Although he did get one hit in four at-bats, his 16th double of the year off Julio Teheran, he was involved in an odd play in the bottom...

St. Louis Cardinals 5-2 Since All-Star Break

The St. Louis Cardinals have won 5 of their last 7 games since returning from the All-Star Game in New York. Granted, these series were more of a warm-up for the Cardinals, as both opponents have been struggling this year. After only losing game 2 in a 3 game series with the San Diego Padres, the Red Birds went on to dominate the Philadelphia Phillies in 3 games (4-1, 11-3, 3-1)...

St. Louis Cardinals: Come September, Trevor Rosenthal should replace Edward Mujica as closer

(via stlcupofjoe.com) Edward Mujica was an All-Star for the first time in his career this season, and he was well deserving of the honor. The St. Louis Cardinals are 25 games over .500 at 62-37, and a pretty big reason has been Mujica’s performance as closer. However, as weird as this may sound to some people, Mujica is not the answer for the Cardinals if they want to make...

Preview: Kelly takes the ball for Cards in Atlanta

The St. Louis Cardinals' fifth starter spot has been quite a revolving door this season, but for now, it's Joe Kelly's to lose. That's assuming he remembers how to pitch. Kelly hasn't seen game action in more than two weeks, but the visiting Cardinals are hoping he can pick up where he left off as he takes the mound Saturday against the Atlanta Braves. St....

Cards take Holliday off DL, option Peterson to Memphis

ATLANTA (AP) Cardinals left fielder Matt Holliday has been activated from the 15-day disabled list and is starting against the Braves on Saturday. Holliday had been out since July 12 with a strained right hamstring. With Holliday's return, Allen Craig is starting at first base. Craig played left field with Matt Adams at first base during Holliday's absence. Adams is not...

Here are quick game summaries with a link to the box score: Memphis lost 6-5. The Memphis Redbirds fell to the Round Rock Express 6-5 on Saturday. St. Louis Cardinals: Breaking down Lance Lynn’s 2013 numbers

(via stlcupofjoe.com) Cardinal Nation, it is time to give Lance Lynn some of the respect he deserves. But, Joe, doesn’t he have a really high earned-run average? Well yes, he does. His 3.98 ERA is the 35th highest of starting pitchers in the MLB. However, regular ERA can at times be deceiving, so there is another statistic out there to come to Lynn’s defense (pun intended...

MLB trade rumors: A case to turn the Cardinals into sellers

(via CardinalsFarm.com) Buy low and sell high, right? Isn’t that a basic investment model? Isn’t the farm system and organization somewhat of an investment?  I am going to throw out an idea that may be unpopular for many St. Louis Cardinals fans, but it is at least worth a listen. The current market in baseball appears to be a seller’s market. With the unfortunate injury to Tim...

Cards Matt Holliday activated from disabled list

As expected the Cardinals have activated outfielder Matt Holliday from the 15-day disabled list. He’ll be in the starting lineup this afternoon against the Braves batting third and playing left field. Holliday has been sidelined since July 11 due to a strained right hamstring. He was able to make it back in the minimum 15 days and ended up missing 10 games.
