Tim Hudson made his first appearance of the spring, allowing an infield single over two innings for the Atlanta Braves in an 8-2 loss to the New York Mets. Ruben Tejada hit a three-run homer and Bobby Parnell allowed two hits over three innings for New York. Hudson went 16-10 with a 3.23 ERA last season, but had back surgery during the offseason and isn't expected back until May. He said he felt fine after his two innings and could have gone further. The Mets scored four runs in the ninth, two on bases loaded walks to Rafael Fernandez and Richard Lucas. Rather than having a starter face an NL East rival, Parnell, who made 60 relief appearances year, started for the Mets. Freddie Freeman and Jordan Parraz homered for the Braves, while Brandon Beachy allowed four runs on seven hits in six innings.

Mets could look to replace struggling Bay in left during season

New York Mets left-fielder Jason Bay is turning in the worst Spring of his career, which is not surprising to fans who have become to associate the 33-year-old’s performance in Queens with career lows.  After an 0-3 performance against the Tigers on Sunday Bay’s Grapefruit League average has dipped below the Mendoza line, sitting at an icy .195. What’s more, there is no power...

Andrelton Simmons Assigned to Minors

It appears as though, after a spring’s worth of uncertainty, the Atlanta Braves have decided on an Opening Day shortstop, with the news this afternoon (courtesy David O’Brien of the Atlanta Journal Constitution) that the club has assigned defensive wunderkind Andrelton Simmons to minor-league camp, leaving Tyler Pastornicky with the job. To which level, precisely, Simmons has...

Atlanta returns much of the same

The 2012 version of the Atlanta Braves isnt much different than the team that finished last season. Other than a new starting shortstop and a couple of new faces on the bench and in the bullpen, Braves fans should be familiar with this years team. Heres a position-by-position look at the Braves heading into their season-opener against the New York Mets on Thursday. Infield Catcher...

With Santana Back, Should The Mets Go To A Six-Man Rotation?

After much speculation over the past few weeks, the Mets have announced that Johan Santana will indeed be the team’s Opening Day starter.  He will followed in the rotation by R.A. Dickey, Jonathon Niese, Mike Pelfrey and Dillon Gee. Because the Mets have three off-days during the first 15 days of the season, Santana will be starting every sixth day for most of the month of April...

Niese proposed contract extension due to analytic thinking

Well, this is refreshing compared to the Minaya era. It turns out some actual thought went into the negotiations with Jon Niese that appear to be headed to the lefty starter getting a five-year contract extension. Reports say that the proposed deal is somewhere around the $28 million range and may on top of that include options for 2017 and 2018. Based on ERA alone, this doesn...

Winding Down Spring Training

As the weather moves from pleasant to hot, it’s time for our local boys of summer to finish up their tune-ups and tweaks while they prepare to make the venture north back to the friendly confines of The Ted. The Atlanta Braves finished last season with an embarrassing 10-20 record and lost the last game of the regular season, missing the playoffs by one game.  Braves Country was...

Braves Trade J.J. Hoover to Reds for Juan Francisco

With Chipper Jones on the DL for the first two weeks of the season, the Braves traded one of their top pitching prospects, J.J. Hoover, to acquire Reds third base prospect Juan Francisco. Hoover, whom Marc Hulet recently ranked as the 13th-best prospect in the Braves system, goes to Cincinnati in a trade for the powerful but strikeout-prone third baseman Juan Francisco. Hoover, a...

The legend of Lucas Duda

There are some who say he was born of the Storm Giants who live in the clouds, and others who claim he was raised by bears in the Adirondacks, still more believe that he could fell a tree with one swing of his mighty club but Met fans know that he’s their best hope to survive this troubling 2012 season. When I look at Lucas Duda, I can’t help but think of the frontier legends...

2012 Mets Preview: Not As Bad As You Think

I’m not going to lose the few shreds of credibility I have and say that the Mets will be in the playoffs this year. Honestly I don’t think it will happen, I’m not that optimistic. The Mets could make the playoffs, but literally everything needs to go right, or Wright (haha, one pun per article). Wright needs to have a fantastic season, Davis needs to be an All-Star, Duda has...
