According to Andy McCullough of the Star-Leger, the New York Mets are close to striking a minor-league deal with former starter Chris Young.

Another survivor of anterior capsule surgery is expected to rejoin the Mets by the end of the week. Chris Young, who started four games last season, is close to an agreement on a minor-league contract with the team, according to a person with knowledge of the situation. The person requested anonymity because the deal was not official.”

Others later confirmed McCullough’s report:

It had been reported earlier in the month that Young was seeking a major league contract, a proposition which apparently few clubs (including the Mets) had any interest in entertaining.  As I said at that time:

“Young would be a nice option, but I can’t imagine the Mets would be willing to give him a major league deal.  Last season for New York he earned $1.1 million and made just four starts.  As good as they were, he was hardly a bargain at 250K per outing.”

If the team can in fact bring him in on a minor-league deal, however, I’m all for it.  There’s been talk of trading Pelfrey, assuming a viable suitor exists, and adding some potential rotation depth simply can’t hurt.  When you consider the upside that comes with Young, who seems tailor made to pitch in Citi Field, this is the kind of small move that can have a big impact if for just once the 31-year-0ld can turn in a healthy season.
