A day after the agent for Jonathan Broxton said he didn’t think his client would end up in New York, a representative for another free agent closer said that he hasn’t heard from the Mets since the GM meetings:

Paul Kinzer, agent for reliever Matt Capps, says he hasn't heard from Mets since GM meetings. Mets had told him they had "possible" interest about 4 hours ago via webReplyRetweetFavorite @NYPost_Mets Mike Puma

I know Capps may fit the ‘buy-low’ mold that most perceive Sandy Alderson trying to fit his free agent signings into, but this is an area the Mets GM is eager to address and maybe someone with more upside could be a target.

Capps signed a 1-year/$7.15 million contract with the Twins last January to avoid arbitration — a raise over his $3.5 million salary from 2010 — and was less then impressive.  The 28-year-old  was 4-7 with 15 saves (nine blown saves), while boasting a 4.25 ERA in 69 relief appearances for Minnesota.  Like Matt wrote yesterday, I’d much rather see New York make a run at signing Brad Lidge or Frank Francisco or even trade for a guy like Huston Street or Andrew Bailey.

Beyond that, I’m probably the last guy who thinks Manny Acosta has the stuff to become a successful closer.  There were times that I watched Acosta and saw a guy who with the attitude necessary to handle the 9th inning and an arsenal of pitches that, at times, completely dominated hitters.  I realize Manny blew 3 of his 7 save opportunities after the All-Star break but I think he has a much better chance of rounding into the role than someone like Parnell.  It’s easy to forget that the 30-year-0ld righty put up a 2.31 ERA and struck out 38 batters in 35 innings of work after the break.

It seems obvious that New York will look outside the organization for help closing out games in 2012 but if it means turning to someone like Capps, I’d just as soon see them give the ball back to a guy who has a chance of being on the team beyond next year.
