Over at Mets Today Joe Janish tries to answer the question of who should be the Mets leadoff hitter now that Jose Reyes and Angel Pagan are gone. He looks at the players ability to get on base and their ability to maneuver around the base paths, and comes to the conclusion that the Mets might be best to go ths unconventional route and use Jason Bay because of the lack of other options. It is a very difficult question to answer and an even more compelling solution so I wanted to give my own outlook on the situation. I took a look at the career numbers of every player who hit leadoff during the MLB games from July 1st-3rd, 2011. There was no real rhyme or reason for the dates I picked, but I wound up with the numbers of 41 different players to compare the Mets projected starting eight with. I was actually shocked with how low the overall OBP the 41 leadoff men had. .328 is a pretty low number on-base percentage for a leadoff hitter and as the graph shows only one of the Mets projected...

If that's all Torres is then Damon makes sense...

Jon Heyman reported yesterday that he was told a competing exec. believed Andres Torres is nothing more then a 5th outfielder. The Mets actions may be confirming that belief, first going after Cody Ross and now monitoring the left handed outfield market. Ankiel and Fokudome could platoon with Torres but Damon might be the perfect fit. Damon would be able to hit at the top of the...

Mets Web-Dings: Ike Davis Is Ready To Make His Mark

Here is part of a great post by Michael Friere of Macks Mets who weighs in on Ike Davis: The Mets drafted Ike with the 18th overall pick, in the first round of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft out of Arizona State University. Advance billing on Ike was that he was a solid hitter, with decent amount of power and an excellent glove. Plus, Ike was left handed, which is considered...

Mets Eye Candy: The 1962 Edition

With the New York Mets celebrating their 50th Anniversary in 2012, I’ll probably end up doing 4-5 1962 Editions of my “Mets Eye Candy” feature. Do you know the story about Hall of Fame writer Leonard Koppett during that 1962 season? While burning the midnight oil at his desk in the newsroom of the NY Post, his phone rang at two in the in morning. “I understand...

Mets’ Ownership Is Its Own Worst Enemy

Well, it just gets better and better for the Wilpons, doesn’t it? For an organization that tries its darnedest to put out nothing but positive PR, it sure has a funny way of achieving the exact opposite. The tighter the choke hold on the Mets’ message, the more mangled it becomes. Even what would be considered “good” news from and for Fred, Jeffy and Uncle Saul appears...

Mets To Announce Josh Lewin Will Replace Wayne Hagin In Radio Booth

Bob Klapisch of the Bergen Record is hearing that the Mets are ready to announce Josh Lewin as the replacement for Wayne Hagin in the WFAN radio booth for the 2012 season. Klapisch says that the former Texas Rangers broadcaster would be signed to a one-year deal. It was Neil Best of Newsday, who first reported that Lewin had emerged as a leading candidate for the job. Lewin, 43,...

Woody Guthrie and the 2012 Mets

You can find a lot of stuff on YouTube but I found out this morning you cannot find Glenn Close singing the National Anthem. I want to write about “The Star Spangled Banner” today and this, I thought, was a good way to do this on a Mets-themed blog. Close has sung the anthem at Mets games more than once and the best thing about her rendition is that she sings it quickly...

Why the new CBA may have hindered signing MiLB

When people would fuss about some over-the-hill-journeyman type veteran player signed to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training, many of us would joke who cares sign them like candy. Basically you were paying a percentage of league minimum to see what they have and then could add them to Buffalo for depth. The new collective bargaining agreement maybe effecting how...

Mets360 podcast with the Rotoprofessor

Yesterday I did a podcast with friend of the site, Eric Stashin, better known as the Rotoprofessor. We talked about fantasy baseball, specifically what the 2012 prospects are for individual Mets players. You can listen to the podcast here: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/mets360/2012/02/06/mets-360-with-the-rotoprofessor Specifically, we talked about Lucas Duda, Ike Davis, David...

My Thoughts Regarding Howard Megdal’s Revocation of Credentials

Yesterday, the Mets Blogosphere was made aware that the Jorunal News’ Howard Megdal was stripped of his press credentials for the 2012 season by New York Mets PR head Jay Horwitz because of “unliked reporting”.  Megdal has tried to get ahold of the Mets PR department, but his request for an explanation went through one ear, and out the other without any further...

A Possible Future HOF Available to Mets on the Cheap

Reports indicate that Johnny Damon is looking for a contract in the $5 million dollar range. I doubt he can score that kind of deal this late in the offseason, so maybe the Mets should see if they could swoop in and sign him to an incentive-laden deal. Where would Damon fit? How about centerfield? Yes, I know the issues with the pop-gun arm, however Damon can still hit (.261/16...

Fight The Folly

Well boys and girls, the Mets are at it again ... making themselves look like paranoid schizophrenics with something to hide. Exhibit #927, the case of revoking press credentials for something other than urinating on the media spread, from Howard Megdal of the Journal News: Since taking over the LoHud Mets Blog in March 2011, I have been credentialed numerous times by the New York...

The Often Overlooked Front Office Position

Whenever there is a discussion about General Manager’s talents with regards to a rebuilding team, it often seems like the amateur draft is a measuring stick used, and it’s used improperly. Perhaps it is because the General Manager is seen as the face of the franchise in terms of decisions to be made, but in reality, the General Manager has little to do with the amateur draft...

Giants' offense promises speedy fixes for 2012

Angel Pagan prides himself as the Giants ' new leadoff hitter. The No. 1 man. Numero uno. So allow him to be the first to make a bold statement about the 2012 Giants in the National League West: "I'm very, very...

Mets Jambalinka: Jason Bay, Wilmer Flores and Daniel Murphy

The big news surrounding the Mets has been the announcement that SNY is going to purchase a bunch of the shares that the Wilpons are offering in the team as a way to raise money. Some see this as nothing more than rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. But is there anything wrong about taking money from a profitable venture and using it to support a struggling one in your financial...
