Originally signed by the Giants in 2008, Luis Mateo’s $625,000 contract was voided because of chips in his elbow.  In November he signed a deal with the Padres, this time for $300,000 but this too was voided when the MLB discovered he had lied about his age.  Finally in 2011 the Mets signed the (then 21) pitcher for $150,000 He has a strong 91-94 MPH fastball that reaches 97 MPH on occasion, a power slider and a changeup.  Currently, he’s pitching in Brooklyn and his results have been quite good. In 2011 Mateo pitched for the Mets #1 DSL squad.  The results are a little staggering: 2.00 ERA, 0.778 WHIP, 63 IP, 44 Hits, 14 ER, 80 Ks… 5 BBs.  His K/9 was 11.4 and his K/BB was a robust 16.00.  This was the DSL and perhaps it didn’t mean too much but it seemed like Mateo might have been a bargain at $150,000 already. Now, in 2012, Mateo has pitched 3 games for Brooklyn and in 17.2 innings has proven… to be even better?  0.51 ERA, 0.509 WHIP, 7 Hits, 1 ER, 2 BBs and 22 Ks.  I think that...

2012 All Stars Announced: David Wright DIssed!

Today the 2012 All Stars were announced, and Mets 3rd baseman David Wright was absolutely screwed. Wright who is second in the NL in batting with a .354 average (as of this posting), second in doubles, third in hits, and seventh in fielding. Wright has had a story book first half, easily a first half MVP candidate, but to be snubbed by the fans as an All Star starter is obscene.  The Mets 3rd

Down On The Farm: July 1, 2012

As the calendar turns to July we shift our attention from the pitchers that we covered last weekend to the hitters this weekend. Remember when so many critics said the Mets have no prospects in the minor leagues? Well they may not have the best but they definitely have some solid pieces on the way.   Buffalo Bisons (41-42, 6 GB) -The Bisons are still within striking distance...

MMO Interviews Mets Prospect Brandon Nimmo

Brandon Nimmo Getting Into The Swing I asked Brandon Nimmo if he had a few minutes to spare at some point before the game against the Hudson Valley Renegades on Sunday. He said, “when?” I said, “you tell me, anytime your available.” He turned around and caught the eye of his hitting coach Bobby Malek who simply nodded, and Nimmo turned back to me and said, “I have time...

This is the Ike Davis Mets fans have been waiting to see

Ike Davis surged above the mendoza line on Saturday afternoon in Los Angeles, collecting two hits in four at-bats during the New York Mets 5-0 victory over the Dodgers: Davis collected his first hit of the contest, a lead-off double, in the top of the second inning before advancing to third on a Lucas Duda fly out to right.  One batter later, he scored the games first run on Daniel...

A bunch of stuff about Wright not being named to NL All-Star Starting Lineup

I never blogged about how ridiculous it is that David Wright didn’t get the starting gig for the All-Star Game. Let’s just say I’m extremely mad. I agree with what everyone is saying…  The game is supposed to mean something. Home field advantage for the league that wins for the World Series—-that means something. The best players in the league should start, not the player...

Phillies Drop Sixth Straight; Three-Hit by Niese and Mets in 11-1 Loss

The struggles continued tonight for Phillies starting pitching and the team in general. It's getting more and more frustrating to say the least, and it hasn't been a fun ride over the past week with the Phillies losing more and more games.  I know I typically write out a game story, but this would have been the worst of the season, so instead of that, here are the scoring...

Mets 11, Phillies 1

NEW YORK -- A few hours after Philadelphia Phillies manager Charlie Manuel acknowledged his team needed to start winning or face the prospect of having veterans traded, the New York Mets did their part to keep the Phillies' losing streak going. The Mets thumped Philadelphia 11-1 on Tuesday, racking up 15 hits in a rout that sent the Phillies to their sixth straight loss in...
