A day that was supposed center around Jose Reyes' return to Citi Field quickly assumed a familiar plotline from Reyes' days in New York. Prior to eking out a 2-1 win over the Florida Marlins, the Mets placed two players on the disabled list with significant injuries, casting uncertainty over their roster for the next few weeks.

The Mets first put Jason Bay on the DL with a non-displaced fracture of a left rib, knocking their left fielder out until at least mid-May. Bay hurt himself diving after a ball in Monday's doubleheader against the Giants. Until further notice, he will not be allowed to do anything more strenuous than ride a stationary bike.

Later in the day, the Mets placed starting pitcher Mike Pelfrey on the DL with swelling in his left elbow. Pelfrey will receive a second opinion on his MRI results, and general manager Sandy Alderson did not rule out a ligament tear.

"I felt good the other day," Pelfrey said. "I would throw one pitch and it would go away. The ball was coming out good. Everything felt good. There was just a little bit of tightness, which I thought was a little bit of tendinitis."

To replace Bay and Tejada, the Mets called up third baseman Zach Lutz and left-handed reliever Robert Carson from Triple-A Buffalo. The Mets will ultimately replace Carson with Chris Schwinden to start in Pelfrey's place on Friday.

As for Reyes, the longtime Mets shortstop received a mixed ovation in his return to Citi Field. He finished 0-for-4, receiving more and more boos as the game wore on. The Mets finally broke through for the win when Lucas Duda singled home Kirk Nieuwenhuis in the eighth, taking Johan Santana off the hook for what would have been a tough-luck loss.
