We’ll know more in a few minutes, but Adam Rubin is reporting that IF/OF Jordany Valdespin and RHP Jeremy Hefner are due to be at Citi Field as part of a taxi squad. They are allowed to be with the team for 24 hours without being activated. Teams are now allowed to utilize a Taxi Squad particularly when doubleheaders after a suspended or cancelled game taxes a team’s roster. Valdespin, 24, was hitting .276 with two homers and seven RBIs in 76 at-bats with Triple-A Buffalo and has been playing mostly center field this season

Breaking News: Jason Bay Placed On DL, Mets Call Up Zach Lutz

The New York Mets today announced the team placed outfielder Jason Bay on the 15-Day Disabled List with a nondisplaced fracture of a rib on the left side and recalled infielder Zach Lutz from Buffalo (AAA) of the International League.  Bay, 33, is hitting .240 (12-50) with three home runs and five RBI in 15 games this season.  He underwent a MRI at the Hospital for Special Surgery...

Mets put INF Cedeno on DL, promote Valdespin

Updates with additional moves. The New York Mets have sent right-hander Jeremy Hefner back to the minors after he made his major league debut. Hefner was promoted from Triple-A Buffalo before the first game of Monday's doubleheader against San Francisco. Reserve infielder Ronny Cedeno was put on the 15-day disabled list, retroactive to Saturday, because of a strain on the left...

Prospect Pulse: Familia Answers Critics

Over the last two weeks I have seen my fill of criticism about Jeurys Familia. For some reason it seems as if Mets fans and bloggers want this guy to fail. Either that, or they are just trying to make themselves look smart by pointing out his short-comings, and predicting limited success for him as a major league prospect. The negative sooth-sayers are predicting at-best that Family...

Bay Placed On DL, Lutz Recalled - Ike To Be Platooned?

It was announced earlier this afternoon that Jason Bay suffered a non-displaced fracture of his rib. Lutz, who was recalled from Buffalo can be used as a 3B or 1B. Chances of Lutz seeing the Hot Corner are slim, so makes one wonder if this means that Fearless Ike, after a dreadful start, might be put into a platoon situation with Lutz. Earlier this spring I wrote about the similarities of

Post-Game: Giants 6 – Mets 1

Davis continues to struggle after going 0-4 today in the loss The Mets were defeated by a score of 6-1 in the first game of the double header.  Miguel Batista lasted just 3.2 innings allowing 6 runs on 7 hits, although only 3 were earned after the Ike Davis error. The Giants got off to a fast start against Batista scoring 2 runs in the 1st inning.  Pablo Sandoval extended his hit...

Mets upend Marlins 2-1 behind awesome Johan outing

The Mets couldn’t be feeling too good about themselves as Johan Santana was leaving the game in the seventh inning. Despite pitching spectacularly, Santana was leaving the game with a 1-0 deficit. Part of the problem was the Mets not being able to score runs against the Miami Marlins ace Josh Johnson. The other part was a shoddy relay throw that allowed Giancarlo Stanton to score...

Dickey, Wakefield shine in "Knuckleball!"

Last night, Squawker Lisa and I went to the Tribeca Film Festival for the premiere of the baseball documentary "Knuckleball!" The movie celebrates the tiny fraternity of MLB knuckleballers, with the main focus on the only two knuckleballers active in 2011 - the Mets' R.A. Dickey and the Red Sox' Tim Wakefield (who retired after the season). There probably wouldn...

Doubleheader Preview: Batista and Gee Look To Freak Out Lincecum and the Giants

After yesterday’s rain out, the Mets and Giants will double dip this afternoon as they will play two games starting at 4:10. In the first game Batista will get the nod against Lincecum while in the second game Bumgarner will start against Gee. In case you forgot about Saturday’s game the Mets were about to end their three game skid in the top of the ninth when a dropped fly...

Mets continue to hurt, place Pelfrey on DL

Earlier today, the Mets placed left fielder Jason Bay on the 15-day DL. The hits keep on coming, as the team has also placed starter Mike Pelfrey on the DL with swelling in his right elbow. Pelfrey really hasn't lived up to the high expectations placed on him by the New York media after being drafted ninth overall in the 2005 draft. That, of course, was the loaded draft that...

Dumb and Humber

The only thing worse than the Mets blowing a sure win when a fielder overran what should have been a game-ending pop would be if it occurred the same day yet another ex-Met threw a no-hitter.Fortunately, the Mets were able to rebound from Kirk Nieuwenhuis' ninth-inning misadventure and beat the Giants, with help from the Giants and manager Bruce Bochy. Bochy decided that the...
