New York GM Sandy Alderson said the Mets will probably be done adding to their bullpen, assuming the deal with Lyon goes through, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports (Twitter). The club had interest in a number of relievers as recently as last week, some mentioned were Jose Valverde and Francisco Rodriguez.. But Lyon probably came cheaper... Alderson sounds serious about pursuing free agent center fielder Michael Bourn, DiComo reports. However, the GM said the Mets could end up going to Spring Training with their current roster. The Mets have sincere interest in Bourn, but don't intend to forfeit the 11th overall pick in the 2013 draft to complete a deal with the Scott Boras client. One Mets official indicated to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe that the team has no interest in Daisuke Matsuzaka (Twitter link).

2013 Mets Projections: Ike Davis, 1B

Ike Davis‘ 2012 season can be summed up in just one word: inconsistent. Fans had high hopes for Davis, who many thought could rise to stardom last year. Two months in, however, people started to question whether Davis should even be on the team, as his batting average struggled to even approach .200. Later in the season, Davis picked up the production, and his batting average gradually...

Is Shaun Marcum a better choice than Chris Young for Mets’ rotation?

The New York Mets finalized their deal with free agent Shaun Marcum last week. Prior to that, they had been kicking the tires on re-signing Chris Young. While that may still be an option, it now appears unlikely. On the surface, it may seem that Marcum is easily an upgrade over Young, but if you look deeper into the stats, you see just how close they really are. Here’s a tale...

Spring Training ’13: Darin Gorski Will Get Long Look As Reliever

Darin Gorski, Binghamton Mets (photograph by MMO) On Monday, general manager Sandy Alderson talked a little bit about Mets left-handed pitching prospect Darin Gorski. Alderson said that Gorski will get a serious look as a reliever in Spring Training, but it is unlikely he’ll make the Opening Day roster. The Mets just want to see how Gorski performs in that role. Gorski, 25, has...

Wright Reaches Out To Michael Bourn, Things Could Be Heating Up

David Wright  told The NY Post yesterday, that he has spoken with and exchanged texts with free-agent center fielder Michael Bourn in an attempt to lure him to Citi Field. “I just wanted to let him know that he would be a great addition here and he’d obviously be welcomed here,’’ Wright said after his first early workout at the Mets’ spring training complex. “I talked...

Is Jose Valverde worth the risk for the Mets?

The Mets lack a reliable reliever, and although they have some younger talent who could potentially fill the void, virtually everyone in the bullpen is a question mark. Over the weekend, rumors arose that the Mets were thinking about pursuing the flamboyant closer, Jose Valverde. The Mets do desperately need an arm in the bullpen to add some depth, and to replace their current closer...

Mets Rumors: Mets and Scott Boras are playing a game of chicken for Bourn

According to Joel Sherman of the Ny Post,  The Mets and Scott Boras are engaged in a game of chicken. The powerful agent is saying he has attractive offers elsewhere for Michael Bourn. The Mets are essentially challenging him to prove those offers exist by remaining relatively inflexible in what they are willing to spend on the fleet center fielder. Bourn does not have an...

The Clock Has Started Ticking On The Sandy Experiment

Pundits often say a college football coach deserves at least two years to turn a team over before anyone can honestly pass judgement.  That time provides the new coach with enough time to recruit his own players and implement his own scheme.  General managers in Major League Baseball get no such grace period.  Thus the dilemma Sandy Alderson currently finds himself in. Since taking...

Report: Michael Bourn Having ‘Ongoing Discussions’ With Mets

Spring training is right around the corner and, shockingly, free agent Michael Bourn still hasn’t signed on with a new club. The latest team to show interest in the speedy outfielder is the New York Mets, according to The Star-Ledger. Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said there is “ongoing discussion” with Bourn. Since Bourn’s former team, the Atlanta Braves, sent Bourn...

Bullpen Idol – The Mets search for a closer

The way things are going…Mr. Met might be the closer. Frank Francisco‘s time as Mets closer looks like it’s coming to an end. General manager Sandy Alderson signed veteran relievers Scott Atchison and LaTroy Hawkins to Minor League deals earlier this week and they still aren’t done adding bullpen help. As per mlb.com, Alderson has made “no secret” that he would like...

The Gamble

It borders on the surreal sometimes with this team. Think about it: there's no money for anything. The Madoffs practically took everything the Wilpons own, forcing them to turn to the immortal LaTroy Hawkins for help. They were the last team to sign a free agent to a major league deal, and Shaun Marcum's $4 million deal remains the only major league deal they've signed...

Derek Lowe a fit for the Mets..

During the off-season before the 2009 season it was rumored that the Mets came very close to signing Derek Lowe only to have the Braves swoop in and grab the veteran pitcher.  The made a low ball offer that they sat on saying they wouldn't bid against themselves, the Braves missed several pitchers and were able to become the highest bidder. Now most believed that the Braves...

LOL Mets

Yep, so everyone who was involved in that 2011 deal between the New York Mets and the San Francisco Giants are now on the Giants, and the two players traded to New York are back on rather inexpensive deals, at that.  Oh, and the Giants won the World Series. So, LOL Mets.  Angel Pagan got pretty damn good when he came to the Giants, and both Andres Torres and Ramon Ramirez were...

Alderson Briefs Reporters On Michael Bourn and Brandon Lyon

Today at Citi Field, Sandy Alderson briefed reporters about the Michael Bourn and Brandon Lyon situations. Regarding Brandon Lyon, Alderson said that if the team agrees to a contract with him, that he is likely finished adding additional arms to the bullpen this winter. “The bullpen can’t be worse and has the potential to be a lot better,” Alderson explained. As we reported...
