The New York Mets have signed right-hander relief pitcher Taylor Buchholz and left-hander starting pitcher Chris Capuano to one-year deals. Both pitchers are coming off of Tommy John surgery. Buchholz will earned $600K while Capuano will get $1.5M with the opportunity to make more with incentives.
To make room for the two pitchers, the Mets have designated Ryota Igarashi for assignment. The odds are low that anyone will claim him, so accept the Mets to bring him back after he clears waivers.
Even though the Mets have signed Capuano, the Mets are not out of the running for Chris Young or Jeff Francis.
2005 was Capuano's best year, when he went 18-12 with a 3.99 ERA in 219 innings pitched, striking out 176 batters and walking 91. In 2006 he was an All-Star, going 11-12 with a 4.03 ERA in 221.1 innings pitched, striking out 174 batters and walking just 47.The next year he struggled with a 5.04 ERA and pitched in only 150 innings. He then missed all of 2008 and 2009 with Tommy John surgery, and came back to pitch for the Brewers in 2010. He went 4-4 with a 3.95 ERA with 66 innings pitched, 54 strikeouts and 21 walks.
Buchholz came into the league in 2004 as a starting pitcher, but didn't see success in the big leagues until two years later as a relief pitcher. In 2006 Buchholz went 6-6 with a 2.14 ERA in 66.1 innings pitched, striking out 56 and walking just 18. He missed all of 2009 and most of 2010 due to Tommy John surgery. In 2010 he pitched 12 innings between the Colorado Rockies and the Toronto Blue Jays. He went 1-0 with a 3.75 ERA with nine strikeouts and six walks.
I like these moves for the Mets. Low risk, high reward type of players. Not sure how much reward they can get from these guys, but I trust Sandy Alderson. I feel if they sign Chris Young it will make people fight to get into the starting rotation and they could put out a decent rotation until Johan Santana comes back.
Right now their rotation looks like: R.A. Dickey – Mike Pelfrey – Jon Niese – Dillon Gee – Chris Capuano
