The NY Post reports that the Mets have signed Jose Valentin to a minor league contract. Valentin would earn $800,000 if he were to make the team out of Spring Training. Valentin was the Mets' primary second baseman in 2006 when he hit .271 with 18 homers. He broke his tibia the following season and last year never played in the majors, leaving the Mets' Triple-A team in June claiming mental and physical duress. Valentin certainly had some big moments during his first go-around with the Mets, but I don't see any real chance of him making the team. Most likely, he was signed to fill out a spring roster that is expected to have 14 of its regular players compete in the WBC. It will be nice to another familiar face in spring games, while Wright, Reyes, Beltran and the other 13 Mets are out doing their thing for promoting Major League Baseball around the world.
