I was glad to see the Mets picked up Freddy Garcia last night. Despite the injury risk, he was worth a gamble and most of that $8 million dollars only goes to him if he pitches an entire season.
I read some blogs last night though, that had me scratching my head...
I see Garcia solely as a guy who will compete with Tim Redding and maybe Jon Niese for the fifth spot in the rotation. That's it.
In my opinion, the Mets still have to fill the void between Johan Santana and Mike Pelfrey.
That gap could be filled by Oliver Perez or Ben Sheets.
The good thing about the Garcia acquisition is that the loser of the battle for the fifth spot in the rotation, will probably bolster the back of the bullpen, which is a definite plus.
But as for the number two spot in the rotation, the search is still on.
