Before the Mets' 2-1 victory Wednesday in San Francisco, manager Terry Collins and general manager Sandy Alderson both made it clear that Wheeler remains unlikely to reach the big leagues this season because of a strict innings limit in place. But a successful month-long run at Buffalo could put him in line to compete seriously for a rotation job next spring. "Everybody's raving about his stuff," Collins said. "It's the same thing with any young pitcher. He's got to learn how to command it." Wheeler did not have any great iss...

Harvey missing bats at notable rate

Last night Mets rookie pitcher Matt Harvey fanned seven San Francisco Giants in a game the Mets lost by a score of 4-1.  The 23-year-old was coming off a performance in which he blew away 11 Arizona Diamondbacks in his major league debut, giving him 18 on the season to go with a 1-1 record and 1.59 ERA. This morning ESPN Stats & Info provided the following tweet, which speaks...

Matt Harvey strong again, this time in losing effort

New York Mets rookie right-hander Matt Harvey made his second career start Tuesday night against the San Francisco Giants and delivered another strong outing.  The 23-year-old worked six innings while striking out seven and allowing just two earned runs on four hits and three walks. In the end it was New York’s defense that did Harvey in as failed double play ball in the second...

Wheeler Will Be Promoted To Triple-A Buffalo This Weekend

From Adam Rubin: After weighing whether to have Zack Wheeler make his Triple-A debut on the road, or give him one more start with Double-A Binghamton to allow Wheeler to make his Buffalo debut at home, the Mets have opted for the latter, a baseball source told ESPNNewYork.com. Wheeler is due to pitch one last time for the B-Mets on Tuesday against Harrisburg, the Nats’ Double...

Zack Wheeler Promoted To Triple-A, Will Not Pitch For Mets This Season

Zack Wheeler’s 11K performance for Double-A Binghamton last night has earned him a promotion. He’s headed to Triple-A Buffalo, the team announced this afternoon. Sandy Alderson also told reporters it was unlikely would pitch in the big leagues this season. The Mets GM said Wheeler has a limit in place of around 150 innings this season, and that will allow him to only pitch...

Who’s Ready For Some More Matt Harvey!

I really loved this post by Bob Klapisch of The Record this morning on Mets rookie pitching phenom Matt Harvey. Harvey isn’t just some overhyped prospect being pimped by desperate ownership. To the contrary: Rival executives believe the 23-year-old right-hander is the most gifted rookie pitcher the Mets have produced since Doc Gooden. Granted, that’s a crazy endorsement for...

Wheeler Deals An 11 Strikeout Gem In Final Tuneup Before Triple-A Start

By all reports, Tuesday night may have been Zack Wheeler’s final start of the 2012 season for the Binghamton Mets, and if it was he’s leaving town with an exclamation point after his name. Behind a season high eleven strikeouts, Wheeler earned his tenth win of the 2012 campaign by defeating the visiting Harrisburg Senators by a score of 3-2. Wheeler pitched six and two thirds...
