The Miami Marlins would love to sign Yoenis Cespedes, a Cuban outfielder looking to make a splash at the Major League Baseball level in 2012, provided he can become legally cleared by the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control. As of now, his status has yet to be “unblocked.”
Cespedes has been granted a travel visa to leave Cuba to come to the United States for about a week to meet with teams, take a physical, and negotiate the best deal possible. During the time he is here, Cespedes is allowed to speak with any team who shows an interest, and he can even negotiate a contract. Yet even if he does reach a deal, Cespedes will not be able to officially sign a contract until he is legally cleared.
