Washington Nationals OF Michael Morse is listed as day-to-day with a right lat strain.  This injury could be a major blow to the Nationals offense, as Morse is expected to be the team's clean up hitter this season.  Lat injuries don't tend to be short term issues in recent history, unfortunately.  Both Jon Lester of the Boston Red Sox and the Atlanta Braves star catcher Brian McCann spent time on the disabled list in 2011 due to lat injuries.

Without Morse, it is unclear who could fill in as the team's cleanup hitter as Spring Training progresses, but the Nationals could be in real trouble if Morse misses any regular season time.  Adam LaRoche could fill the role in a worst-case scenario, but his spring start was pushed back for the third time today to Thursday at the earliest.  His health remains in question.  Without those two power bats, there aren't any real solutions to hit clean up for the Nats, which would further hurt the Nationals already-concerning offense.

Here's hoping that this turns out to be a short term issue for the Nationals left fielder, but recent history isn't so kind to those odds.
