Mediocre Will HuntingIt's looking more and more likely that the deeply slumping Will Middlebrooks will be sent down to AAA soon and either Brock Holt or Drew Sutton will be called up to Boston. It makes no sense to have Middlebrooks languish in his ineffectiveness one or two times a week—he'd benefit much more with steady at-bats at Pawtucket. This move would also allow Jose Iglesias to start every day at either third or short—with Holt or or Sutton filling in at the hot corner. The Fenway Snark website raises the interesting issue of whether we should think of Middlebrooks as big-league ready or just as a prospect. Food for thought.

Middlebrooks optioned to Pawtucket

AP Photo It seemed inevitable, and it happened. Will Middlebrooks has been optioned to Pawtucket due to terrible offensive numbers this season. The Red Sox have optioned third baseman Will Middlebrooks to Triple A Pawtucket and purchased the contract of infielder Brandon Snyder. Middlebrooks is hitting .192 this season with a .617 OPS and lost his position to Jose Iglesias...

Will Middlebrooks Optioned to Pawtucket, Red Sox Call Up Utility Man Brandon Snyder

The Red Sox have recently had trouble finding regular at-bats for the trio of Stephen Drew, Jose Iglesias and Will Middlebrooks. With Drew playing very well at shortstop and Iglesias and Middlebrooks being young players who need regular plate appearances to develop, something had to give. Just before 4 p.m. Tuesday, the Red Sox announced that they had optioned Middlebrooks to Triple...

'Rocky Mountain Fry'; Sox Pound Colorado, 11-4

(Jim Rogash/Getty Images)Ryan Dempster must be wondering why the Red Sox can't support him like this all the time. Boston pounded out a season-high twenty hits on the way to smiting the Rockies at Fenway, 11-4. Four different Red Sox players collected three hits (Dustin Pedroia, Daniel Nava, Jacoby Ellsbury, Jose Iglesias), while Pedroia knocked in four runs in the rout. Dempster...

Your Morning Dump...where Farrell has a funny idea of rebuilding Bailey's confidence

Every morning, we compile the links of the day and dump them here... highlighting the big storyline. Because there's nothing quite as satisfying as a good morning dump. So much for using Andrew Bailey in low-pressure situations. After blowing three saves in a 10-day span, Bailey was displaced from the Red Sox’ closer role last Friday, at which time manager John Farrell admitted...

Routine fly ball ends up costing Red Sox game

Daniel Nava was burned by a controversial call late in the Detroit Tigers’ 7-5 win over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. The two teams were tied at four in the bottom of the eighth inning, when Detroit’s Avisail Garcia lifted a flyball to the warning track in right. Nava drifted back, then appeared to make a basket catch, before dropping the ball as he readied to throw it back into...

Boston Red Sox return home looking to get back on track vs. Rockies

Despite dropping three out of four games in Detroit over the weekend, the Red Sox begin their eight game homestand in first place by two and half games and welcome the surprising Colorado Rockies to Fenway Park for a brief two game series. This series will mark the first both teams have faced each other in Boston since Game 1 and 2 of the 2007 World Series, in which the Red Sox won...

Red Sox Fan Multitasks, Catches Foul Ball While Having Cell Phone Conversation (Video)

Your browser does not support iframes. There’s a reason some fans bring their own baseball glove to the ballpark — because a foul ball could come flying their way at any point during the game. Especially if you are in the front row down the foul line. One Red Sox fan had an extremely important phone call he had to take (we are assuming) during the first inning of Tuesday’s...

Red Sox 11, Rockies 4

Dustin Pedroia drove in four runs and had three of Boston's season-high 20 hits, and Ryan Dempster took advantage of an early cushion that kept getting bigger for the Red Sox in their 11-4 victory over the Colorado Rockies on Tuesday night. Mike Napoli added two RBIs and Jacoby Ellsbury, Daniel Nava and Jose Iglesias joined Pedroia with three hits apiece as the Red Sox gave...

Red Sox' Franklin Morales leaves Saturday's start, DL trip looming

The Boston Red Sox may have to place pitcher Franklin Morales on the disabled list after he departed early from Saturday's loss to the Detroit Tigers. Evan Drellich of MassLive.com said that although manager John Farrell cited a shoulder problem as the cause, Morales himself said it was the left pectoral, an area he has already had issues with this season. Either way, a DL...

Recap: Sox slug their way to 11-4 win over Rockies

The Red Sox didn't have to worry about their biggest weakness tonight, as the game was put away before the bullpen got involved. Boston won 11-4 while compiling 20 hits off four Rockies pitchers. Juan Nicasio started, but lasted just two and a third innings as the Sox pummeled him for 12 hits and seven runs. Each ensuing reliever walked at least one, gave up multiple hits, and...

Four Real? Red Sox vs Tigers 6-23-13

Game 78: Poor Defense + bad bullpen = loss Boston just can't get it done right now. With closer Andrew Bailey blowing game one of the series, and poor pitching throughout the four games with Detroit, Boston has a lot of pitching planning to do if they want to stay at the top of the AL East. Boston lead in this afternoon's game until the seventh, and then things got out of...

Game 79: Rockies at Red Sox - Reminiscing about '07, Sox-Rox Battle

Ben Whitehead Contributing Writer Welcome home, Red Sox. The American League-leading Boston Red Sox (45-33) return to Fenway Park for nine-game home-stand and get it kicked off with an interleague matchup against the Colorado Rockies (39-38). Recap: Sox can't hold on lead, drop series

That was awful...again. The Sox traded early punches with the Tigers, then came out with a 4-3 lead in the 4th that lasted into the 7th. The Tigers tied it in the 7th, added 3 in the 8th, and Boston's 1 run in the 9th wasn't nearly enough, ending the final game at 7-5. The Sox looked terrible in the series. Blowing saves, leads, leaving men on base. It was especially frustrating...

John Farrell Ejected After Umpires Rule Daniel Nava Catch, Drop on Transfer as Error (Video)

Most of the time, umpire error has minor significance on the outcome of an MLB game. This is not once of those instances. In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Red Sox and Tigers were all knotted up at 4-4. Avisail Garcia led off the inning by skying a fly ball deep to right field. Daniel Nava camped under it and pulled the ball in basket style. As he was taking the baseball out...
