This week in Tokyo Seattle Mariners left fielder Mike Carp was placed on the 15-day disabled list. Not a great way to start your season.

Carp suffered the injury diving for a double hit by Kurt Suzuki of the Oakland A's in game 1 of the MLB 2012 season's opening series in the Tokyo Dome.

Your probably wondering how this came to be since Carp stayed in through the entire 11-inning game, going 0-for-4 but making several running catches later in the game.

Quote: "He toughed it out" The M's have recalled Carlos Peguero from AAA Tacoma to replace Carp on the roster.

Here's the video of the injury.

The 25-year-old Carp batted .276 with 12 homers and 46 RBIs last season.

Mariners' Ryan proposes to girlfriend

The Mariners' season-opening trip to Japan provided shortstop Brendan Ryan with the perfect opportunity to pop the question, and Major League Baseball provided an assist. The 30-year-old told his longtime girlfriend he would be taking her on a tour of the city Tuesday, but the guide was actually an employee of Major League Baseball who was in on the plan. When the couple reached...

Mariners beat A's in 11th in opener

Dustin Ackley drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the 11th inning and Ichiro Suzuki went 4 for 5 as the Seattle Mariners beat the Oakland Athletics 3-1 Wednesday in baseball's season-opener in Tokyo. Brendan Ryan doubled to lead off the 11th, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Chone Figgins and scored on Ackley's single to center. Suzuki then gave Seattle an insurance...

Seattle Mariners 2012 opening day diary, at 3AM

Sports make people do crazy things.  Whether it’s the Little League father who feels the need to beat up a Little League umpire for calling a third strike on their six year-old son, or Bud Selig deciding to start the 2012 Major League Baseball season in Tokyo, Japan in the middle of spring training, sport causes insanity.  As a fan of baseball and a writer of sports, I’ve...

2012 season preview: Seattle Mariners

Here were the bright spots for the 2011 Mariners: Felix Hernandez, and Dustin Ackley. That’s pretty much it. Ichiro, the face of the franchise, had a disappointing season, his worst in America. The rest of the pitching staff struggled, and #2 starter Doug Fister was dealt to the Tigers in July. In 2012, the Mariners have improved in places (most notably, with a full season of Ackley...

The 2012 Seattle Mariners week that was: Japan edition

Ichiro looks good in pink Hello all, and welcome to the first edition of my new weekly column titled The Mariners: Week That Was. This is going to be a fun column, with lots of laughs, I hope, and other good stuff. Normally it will be a top 10 list, a la David Letterman, but since this was a short week, I’m starting off with five. So here goes. I hope you all enjoy it, our first...

Where and When Can You Watch the Mariners and A’s In Japan

Hard to believe, but MLB’s 2012 season is about to unfold while most of America is asleep. The “Gloops Japan Opening Series 2012” (yes, “Gloops” is the title sponsor) starts Weds and ends Thursday when the Athletics and Seattle Mariners play at the Tokyo Dome. But, many have asked when and where on the dial they can watch the game. Here’s the lowdown: Live on ROOT...

Ichiro look alike shows up in Japan

From fellow Yardbarker website Hall Of Very Good... Apparently, the Seattle Mariners superstar has a doppleganger and, naturally, he took it upon himself to show up at an autograph signing Monday...dressed exactly like the ten-time All-Star. Quote: "I couldn't tell the difference," Saunders said. "It was unbelievable. Full uni, the facial hair...

Charting At-Bats: Yoennis Cespedes Debut

The Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners opened the 2012 MLB season early this morning before a sell-out crowd of 44,227 in the Tokyo Dome, Japan. The two game series was held in Japan to raise money for relief efforts to assist with the rebuilding in Japan following last year’s earthquake and tsunami. Clearly the attraction of the series is Ichiro Suzuki, who didn’t disappoint...

NWSB Insider and Seattle Mariners blogger Jonathan Irwin reports on the second M’s game of the year in his Love ‘em & Hate ‘em. A 4-1 loss to the Oakland Athletics in Tokyo Japan. The bullpen gave up 3 runs on 5 hits. Shawn Kelley could only pitch 0.1 innings, while George Sherrill couldn't even get through an inning.

West over the last decade, grabbing a pair of second-place finishes in that time frame. Is this the season that things...

Game Picks - Thursday: March 29, 2012

The Game Picks season started with a win and though it took three cups of coffee and a couple of aspirin, that 6:10 in the morning game start was worth the early wake up time. For a first game of the season, that was pretty exciting, was it not? Ichiro got all down with his home self. Dustin Ackley was the run producer. Yoenis Cespedes got his first major league hit and Felix Hernandez...
