The Red Sox faced a power outage and the lights-out pitching of Justin Verlander in the same contest, and still, they managed to come out on top in Game 3. One swing of the bat from Mike Napoli proved to be all that Boston needed on Tuesday night, as the first baseman drilled a solo shot in the seventh inning to put the Sox on the board. With Verlander on the mound, John Lackey rose to the occasion, tossing a gem and allowing only four hits in 6 2/3 innings before handing the ball over to Craig Breslow. The two starting pitchers combined for 18 strikeouts on the day. The combination of Breslow, Junichi Tazawa and Koji Uehara managed to keep Lackey’s shutout intact, and Uehara tossed the four-out save to secure the victory in Detroit. With the huge win, the Red Sox hold a 2-1 series lead in the ALCS, and they will square off against the Tigers on Wednesday at 8:07 p.m., with Jake Peavy and Doug Fister taking the mound.
