Former Mets and Dodgers catcher Mike Piazza remains in the news after the release of his new book Long Shot. As if the unique details from Piazza's book weren't enough, he will be joining 1019 Entertainment to produce Constantine. Yes, that Roman Emperor Constantine that lived in the 300s. Piazza will be joined in producing the screenplay, written by Gladiator producer and screenwriter David Franzoni, by Ralph Winter and Terry Botnick of 1019 Entertainment. Piazza reportedly became involved with the project due to his interest in the history of the Roman Empire. This seems just a little strange to me, While Piazza is a devout Catholic, he has no experience in the film world, and it's not as if he's teaming with Hollywood novices in Winter, Botnick, and Franzoni. It almost seems like they were looking for a high profile person to tack on to the project to gain some notoriety... and they ended up with Piazza, whose name is in the news lately due to his failed election into the Baseball Hall of Fame in January and the release of his book this month. It's just another bizarre twist in recent weeks for Piazza, who criticized Vin Scully in his book for turning Dodgers fans against him, something that never happened. [Variety]
