Depending on what day of the week it is, opinions differ on Torii Hunter. The Detroit Tigers outfielder has a way of shoving his foot in his mouth, but he also has a way of endearing himself to those he has played with, or had some kind of association with. It appears that one of his biggest fans associated with the Los Angeles Angels is going to miss him more than anyone else. That’s superstar Mike Trout’s mother. Speaking to Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com, Debbie Trout said “I really am going to miss Torii.” It appears that Hunter took her 21-year-old son under his wing, and acted as a mentor for the young superstar. Debbie was so appreciative of his help with her son, that she has even tweeted with Torii since he left LA for Detroit. Debbie’s husband, and Mike’s father, Jeff, also has a great appreciation for what Torii did. “Not only did he help him with his approach to the game, but all the little things that people don’t realize when you get up there as a 20-year-old kid — how to behave in the clubhouse, what time to get there,” Mike’s father, Jeff, said. “He’s counseled [...]

No days off for Tigers' Fielder

DETROIT -- Prince Fielder grew up in a privileged household, but his attitude is more reflective of the working-class people of Detroit who pay to watch him play. He's rarely taken a day off since coming into the league with Milwaukee in 2006. He played in 157 games in his first full season in the majors. In the five seasons after that, he sat out a total of eight games. ...

Step-up roles available with Tigers

DETROIT Who is being over-looked as the Tigers head into spring training? There could be a player nobody is thinking about right now who will make an impact. And there are players who have been pushed to the side who will step up as the Tigers attempt to reach the World Series in consecutive seasons for the first time since 1934 and 1935. Nobody outside of the clubs front office...

Countdown to the 2013 Season

It is getting to be that time of year: TigerFest has reminded that fans that the season is on its way, they pitchers and catchers are starting to pack their bags (they report in only 11 days) the turtle is clearing its throat, and Opening Day is exactly 2 months away. Here is a scrapbook of highlights from the Tigers’ Winter Caravan and TigerFest. Well this time last season, the...

Fantasy: MLB prospects who will help you this season

photo credit: Minda Haas I don’t mean to brag (well, maybe a little) but I won all my fantasy baseball leagues last year. Even taking into account my utter brilliance, what really carried me to victory was my Bryce Harper/Mike Trout combo patrolling the outfield for each of my imaginary teams. Also, on my imaginary teams, Harper and Trout share a small apartment and are constantly...

Jered Weaver would be OK with a gay teammate

After the wildly ignorant comments of San Francisco 49ers defensive back Chris Culliver yesterday, you'll (hopefully) be pleased to know that not all professional athletes are total neanderthals. On a video podcast hosted by Robert Fick and Dmitri Young (which is a weird enough story unto itself), Jered Weaver and his brother Jeff made the proclamation that they are totally...

Halo Headlines: Weaver would be OK with a gay teammate, no extension talks with Mike Trout yet

The February 1st, 2013 edition of daily news for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim including Weaver would be OK with a gay teammate, no extension talks with Mike Trout yet and much more... The Story: Jered Weaver would be OK with a gay teammate. The Monkey Says: I wrote this piece, but suffice it to say that I am annoyed that this is even a story. Also, what I left out is...

Total Run Index Series: Top Ten Left Fielders

We continue with our normal series, but we add in an extra twist as we move to the outfield. Position switches occur more routinely with the outfield, so players move around within the index. Mike Trout is being moved to left field (among others that fall outside the top ten) while Josh Hamilton is being moved to right field. So, those two players will be switched even though Hamilton...

Player Poetry

By Jessica Grey - AngelsWin.com Feature Writer Although I consider watching baseball a full time job my actual day job is writing stuff.  Okay, not quite. My actual day job is running around after two preschoolers and a hyperactive puppy.  My writing stuff job gets done at night. This may come as a shock to you, but most baseball games happen at night.  I like to say there...
