The Giants' Madison Bumgarner has received very little run support during his season-worst six-start winless stretch. He has typically been plagued by the same issue against the Diamondbacks. Bumgarner goes for his first victory in over a month Sunday as the Giants try to salvage a four-game split against the D-backs. Among the NL leaders in ERA and opponents' batting average (.204), Bumgarner (11-9, 2.91 ERA) has missed out on his share of wins thanks in part to a lousy 3.55 run-support average. The left-hander has seen things get worse during his last six outings, a stretch during which he has been backed by a combined nine runs. Bumgarner yielded two runs in six innings but didn't factor in the decision of Tuesday's 3-2 loss in San Diego. He is 0-8 with a 3.02 ERA when receiving two runs of support or fewer compared to 11-1 with a 2.79 ERA when he gets three or more. "He's as tough a competitor as you can find," said manager Bruce Bochy, whose te...

Did Yusmeiro Petit’s wife jinx his perfect game?

San Francisco Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit nearly threw the 24th perfect game in MLB history, but he gave up a hit on a 3-2 pitch with two outs in the ninth inning against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night to lose his place in history. Those who believe in superstitions — such as not mentioning […]

San Francisco Giants: Why September is important

The Giants entered Thursday’s game with the Arizona Diamondbacks at 62-77, 21 games behind the first place Dodgers, and struggling with the San Diego Padres to see who will finish last in the division. So, by the record, it would seem that the Giants season is over which it is. However, the Giants still have things they need to do. Heath Hembree throws for the Giants in spring...

Did Yusmeiro Petit’s Wife Cost Him A Chance At A Perfect Game?

Quick, what’s the first rule of a pitcher throwing a perfect game? DON’T TALK ABOUT IT. Heck, don’t even stop there–don’t talk about it, think about it and for heaven’s sake don’t let a police escort take you down to the field so you can witness the magic closer and celebrate. That’s precisely what Yusmeiro Petit’s wife made the mistake of doing. Call it silly...

Giants Walk Off With A Win In 11

It was torture from the bottom of the eighth inning on during today’s San Francisco Giants’ (64-79) game as they battled against the Arizona Diamondbacks (72-70). Starting pitcher, Madison Bumgarner (11-9, 2.82 ERA), threw a gem giving up only four hits with nine strikeouts with 89 pitches in just six innings. It looked as though the Giants had the win for Bumgarner in the bag...

Barry Zito as a Disappearing Exception

Barry Zito's time with the Giants is coming to a close. The Giants probably signed him to his huge contract in part because he seemed to be able to out-pitch his peripherals, While he did so in Oakland, that ability seemed to disappear in San Francisco.

Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit was one pitch away from a perfect game Friday night

San Francisco Giants pitcher Yusmeiro Petit was one pitch away from a perfect game Friday night. The 28-year-old journeyman surrendered a two-out single on a 3-2 pitch to Arizona Diamondbacks pinch hitter Eric Chavez in the ninth inning. San Francisco right fielder Hunter Pence dived in vain to catch Chavez's sinking line drive. Petit put his hands on his head in disappointment...

McCarthy, D-backs look to bounce back against Giants

After nearly witnessing the second perfect game in franchise history, the Giants are hoping to see a strong outing from their only pitcher to accomplish that momentous feat. Matt Cain will try to have a successful return from his first stint on the disabled list and help the Giants put another dent in the Diamondbacks' faint playoff hopes Saturday night. Yusmeiro Petit, who...

D-Backs manage 1 hit in 3-0 loss to Giants

Eric Chavez thought he would make a pinch-hit appearance. He never imagined it would be under these circumstances. Chavez's two-out single broke up Yusmeiro Petit's bid for a perfect game and was Arizona's only hit in a 3-0 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Friday night. ''I had never faced him before, so I came up to watch him pitch in the fifth and he was...

Between Yusmeiro Petit’s almost-perfect game last night and Matt Cain’s return from the disabled list tonight, the San Francisco Giants’ rotation has been at the forefront of their team news. While several starters’ contracts run out at the end of this season, we shouldn’t see too many changes next year. The Giants only have two definite returners in their rotation next...

Almost Perfect

Now, a few days later, last Friday night was…unexpected.  To put it mildly. I’ve often told people that being at Matt Cain’s Perfect Game was more special than being at one of the World Series games, because with a Perfect Game, you can’t force it to happen.  You know you’re going to a World Series game when you buy the ticket.  You never know when a Perfect Game will...

McCarthy sharp as D-backs down Giants

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Brandon McCarthy pitched eight strong innings and Paul Goldschmidt had three hits, including a triple, to lift the Diamondbacks to a 2-1 win over the Giants on Saturday night. McCarthy (4-9) gave up one run and six hits while striking out six. Brad Ziegler pitched a scoreless ninth for his ninth save in 11 chances. Goldschmidt broke a 1-1 tie with a triple...

Rockies-Giants Preview

Jhoulys Chacin flirted with a no-hitter the last time he faced the San Francisco Giants. Now he'll face them in a place where he has excelled. The Colorado Rockies starter has pitched well at AT&T Park heading into Monday night's matchup with Tim Lincecum to start a three-game set. Chacin (13-8, 3.16 ERA) battled through a high fever to throw 6 2-3 hitless innings...
