General manager Doug Melvin and the Milwaukee Brewers were one of the busiest teams last offseason, most notably dealing for starting pitchers Zack Greinke and Shaun Marcum. But reports from this year’s winter meetings are much quieter for Milwaukee as there isn’t as much money available and a lot of the free agents wouldn’t fit well on the team.
From Adam McCalvy on brewers.com, here are the moves Milwaukee has made (none) and ones they are considering at this year’s Winter Meetings in Dallas:
- Offered a contract to Jerry Hairston, Jr., who played third base during the team’s playoff run. Hairston declined and instead signed with the Los Angeles Dodgers.
- At shortstop, the Brewers are targeting Jimmy Rollins and Rafael Furcal. Rollins would command much of the $10 million the Brewers reportedly have available. They also are in talks to bring back Yuniesky Betancourt, who would cost much less.
