What's the News?
Well it was a bit of a blowout in Akron last night for the opener. I have some pictures and videos that I'll be getting up sometime this weekend. I was running late so I didn't get there as early as I wanted. I'll be there tonight again, but I'm going more to hang out with some friends than anything. I think I may go Saturday weather permitting to get what I wanted to get today. Bigger crowd than I thought.
I will get to see Russell Branyan tonight though, so expect a full-report on Russell.
COLUMBUS
The Clippers dropped their second game of two against Toledo 6-3 after Jeanmar Gomez sort of fell off after a strong start.
Gomez went the first four innings with just one run, then got hit hard in the fifth. Final line for him reads six innings, five runs off nine hits and two walks. Yikes. Carlton Smith pitched two shutout innings.
Good nights for Jose Constanza and Chris Gimenez. Constanza went 3-5 in the leadoff role with Trevor Crowe getting a day off. Chris Gimenez hit his third home run of the year and second in three days, a two-run shot that would provide most of the Clippers' runs.
Yohan Pino should be on the mound for the Clippers as they open up a series in Louisville, their first on the road. They'll have to make a roster move to get him on the roster because they made him inactive to get Jeremy Sowers active.
The Clippers will get to face big money acquisition of the Reds Aroldis Chapman in this one. This will be Chapman's second professional start.
AKRON
Rough home opener for the defending Eastern League Champions. The Akron Aeros fell to Bowie in a straight-up beatdown, 9-1.
Connor Graham was on the mound and he got off to a horrible start. He threw nine straight balls, two walks of course, including a wild pitch to open the game up. Then he found the zone, got a double play ball and retired the side without damage.
The MO on Graham is real. He's very erratic. He had two wild pitches, he'd go innings without walking a guy and then just start putting people on. He gave up five runs in five innings. He came out for the sixth and you could tell after the first few hitters he was done.
Neil Wagner is the other pitcher who struggled. He came into a 5-1 game in the eighth inning and only recorded one out. He got pounded for four runs off five hits. He just gave up hit after hit after hit. Hard hit balls through the infield that just got by diving infielders Cord Phelps and Carlos Rivero. Then a double. It just wasn't a good outing for Neil and I think since he's been closing, he might be out of that role.
Two great defensive plays in the same inning. Tim Fedroff made a spectacular diving catch to end the inning and Matt McBride made a GREAT read on a sinking line drive to right. He didn't dive, but it was a great read and a great catch.
McBride has an arm out there. He almost gunned down a runner at home, but Toregas kind of didn't reach out for the ball, it was on target for the most part. He also caught a lazy runner at second in the same inning, and from my vantage point, the runner was tagged out, but the umpire didn't call it that way.
Offensively it was a struggle. Nick Weglarz excited the crowd early with a towering shot that cleared the right field bleachers. Then it was a whole bunch of nothing. The Aeros did get two solid hits from Cord Phelps and Beau Mills rode a few deep flies to right-center, but it was very uneventful. I got some video of Connor Graham throwing and Lonnie Chisenhall's last at-bat where he got a single.
Tomorrow the Aeros are at it again with Bowie and as mentioned, Russell Branyan should be in the lineup for the Aeros. On the mound will be Paolo Espino.
KINSTON
Off-day for Kinston. They resume play in Winston-Salem with Alex White on the mound.
LAKE COUNTY
They just keep on winning don't they? The Lake County Captains remain undefeated with yet another win, a 6-4 victory over Lansing.
Danny Salazar gave up all the runs off nine hits and two walks over 4.2 innings of work. Chris Jones picked up his second save, a three out gem of an outing with just two hits and four strikeouts. Francisco Jimenez picked up his third win early in the year.
And yet again, Bo Greenwell continues his incredibly hot start. Greenwell is now hitting .433 after going 2-5 with a three run home run and five total RBI. Kid is just rocking it.
Casey Frawley walked twice and tripled and the trio of Jeremie Tice, Greg Folgia, and Kyle Smith had two hits each.
Can this team be beat? Of course, but so far, no one has! Austin Adams will look to keep the momentum up as he starts and will eventually be relieved by Marty Popham as the Aston Martin combo goes at it again.
