The Tribe Daily:
What's the News?
Outfielder Brian Horwitz was flat out released yesterday to make room for Michael Brantley on the Columbus roster. It makes sense, with Jose Constanza playing well, having Crowe, now Brantley, and then Gimenez and Duncan who can both play the corner spots, Horwitz isn't really going to be needed. Don't forget Jordan Brown when he returns soon.
Horwitz was picked up from San Francisco in the minor league portion of the Rule V Draft last December.
Also from Akron, reliever Bryan Price has been placed on the Disabled List. He has right shoulder injury.
Yesterday I forgot to post this, but it still very much is useful. De La Cruz pitched the other day and Nick Hagadone last night. Both have mini-scouting reports from Baseball America in this post here.
COLUMBUS
Hector Rondon got pounded into the dirt yesterday as the Clippers dropped their first game to Indianapolis, 9-4.
Rondon went just 3.2 innings and gave up seven runs off nine hits, but he walked just one. The bad news is he gave up three home runs, all in the fourth inning. Two solo shots and a two-run homer. It was part of the seven run-drubbing in the fourth inning that ended his night. So hey, he gets through the first three and then all of a sudden he gets pounded. Very weird.
Hector Ambriz had his fourth shutout inning in his "rehab" stint for Columbus. He struck out two more. The clock is ticking, what is the team going to do with him if he keeps it up?
The offense came on late, but didn't really have much of a chance to catch up.
Brian Bixler, Jason Donald, and Shelley Duncan all knocked in runs. Anderson Hernandez hit his first home run of the year.
Jeanmar Gomez looks to get the Clippers back in the win column against Indy again on Wednesday.
AKRON
The Aeros offense was shutdown Tuesday by the Altoona pitching staff, mustering just two hits in their 2-0 loss.
The two hits came from who else but Lonnie Chisenhall and Cord Phelps, who continue to hit even when the pitching is good.Chisenhall doubled. Carlos Rivero did walk three times on the day, which is very encouraging on his part.
Connor Graham was eh... He didn't give up an earned run, just one unearned, but he walked five more again in four plus innings to take his second loss.
CC Lee gave up a run and he walked three hitters, must have caught the bug from Graham. Vinnie Pestano with another scoreless inning for the Aeros.
Paolo Espino will go for the Aeros as they look to avoid a sweep at the hands of Altoona.
KINSTON
Nick Hagadone was on some kind of fire for Kinston as they snapped their losing streak and shutout Wilmington for a 4-0 win.
Hagadone and TJ McFarland tag-teamed the scoreless effort for Kinston with Hagadone going 4.2 and striking out seven with two hits and three walks. McFarland finished the fifth and went the rest of the way giving up just a hit and two walks to earn the win.
Kyle Bellows knocked in two runs, Jason Kipnis had two hits, Donnie Webb had two walks, and Abner Abreu had a double for the offense as they scrapped together four runs in the victory.
Carolina League's ERA leader Alex White takes the mound for Kinston as they play game three of four in the series against Wilmington.
LAKE COUNTY
I think I've gotten to a point where I'm shocked when the Captains lose a game, which they did yesterday 7-5 to Great Lakes.
Jeremie Tice led the way with two hits and a RBI and the hitters following him, Chun Chen and Adam Abraham both knocked in two runs each to power all of Lake County's offense.
Catcher Roberto Perez doubled, scored two runs and walked three times.
Chris Jones got the starting nod for the Captains and went five innings giving up three runs off four hits and no walks. He took the loss, but reliever Rob Bryson went two innings and gave up four runs. He gave up the four spot in the sixth inning after Jones' day had ended and of course the offense didn't start coming back until after Bryson's struggles.
Austims or whatever, Austin Adams and Marty Popham will for the Captains in game two of their series against Great Lakes. Adams will start, Popham will come in after.
