Darin Ruf 2012 Reading Phillies- .316/1.023, 88 R, 145 H, 31 DBL, 35 HR, 95 RBI. He leads all of minor league baseball in homeruns, is 3rd in OPS, and is close to cracking the top 10 in RBI.  He’s done all this in the Double-A Eastern League that is regarded as having very fair parks (not hitter friendly like the Texas League or Pacific Coast League).  Ruf is not considered a “prospect” because he lacks “tools”.  Tools are great, they helped build Noah’s ark, but I could give two squirts of pee about tools when it comes to players, just as long as they produce.  I’m not stupid, I understand that toolsy prospects have a higher ceiling than non-toolsy guys like Tyler Cloyd or Darin Ruf.  However, it sucks that they get pushed aside because of this.  You don’t know what you have until you test it out.  In other words, give the dude a shot.  Maybe that’s what the Phillies have in mind, since Ruf has recently been moved to left field, a position that isn’t blocked at the MLB level like

Phillies Nation TV: NL Wild Card, Red Sox/Dodgers Trade

On the latest edition of Phillies Nation TV, I’m off, so Corey and the rest of the PN crew takes over. Corey’s brother, Eric Seidman, also our newest contributor, joins the program to discuss the NL Wild Card picture and if the Phillies have a chance. Jay Floyd stops by to talk about Darin Ruf and Tyler Cloyd and whether or not they’ll ever see the light of day in Philly. Ian...

Darin Ruf Ties Ryan Howard's Single-Season Home Run Record With 37th Dinger

Photo Courtesy of @12penn2. He did it again! Phillies minor-leaguer Darin Ruf has homered for the 37th time this season for the Reading Phillies. The 26 year-old first baseman broke Ryan Howard's single-season home run record at Reading this evening. Ruf has been on a tear all season, but in August he has been absolutley unstoppable. In 27 games this month, Ruf is hitting...

Phillies fill-in Frandsen standing tall as a regular

PHILADELPHIA -- Lost in the heroics and good fortune from Cliff Lee, the Phillies hard-luck left-hander who went a whole calendar year between wins at Citizens Bank Park before his seven sharp innings on Sunday, was the ongoing quiet yet productive performance of a veteran utility infielder who has taken the reins at third base for the Phillies in August. Lee was only able to drive...

Philadelphia's Utley considering third base

Ten years later, Chase Utley is considering the hot corner again. Utley, the Phillies' five-time All-Star second baseman, took grounders at third base several hours before Philadelphia played the New York Mets on Wednesday night. It's uncertain whether he'll do it in an actual game. While the idea is still in the early stages, it created quite a buzz around a team...

Darin Ruf Now One Home Run Shy of Ryan Howard's AA Reading Phillies Record

Photo courtesy of Penn Shelly. He did it again.  Last night Phillies (prospect?) Darin Ruf hit his 36th home run of the season for AA Reading.  The Reading Phillies record of 37 is held by Ryan Howard. Earlier I wrote about the skepticism.  Is Ruf the next Ryan Howard? Or is he the next Matt Rizzotti?  As time has gone on, people (including myself) are getting less skeptical...

Where in the world is Michael Schwimer?

No one disputes that Michael Schwimer wasn't pitching well for the Phillies lately, allowing six earned runs in his last 6 2/3 innings. The Phillies believe he just wasn't getting the job done, but Schwimer believes he's hurt.

Recent four-game win streak marches Phillies towards .500, nothing else

The trades of Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence, along with the waiver of Joe Blanton, tells you all you need to know about the 2012 Phillies. They be sellers. Plus September is at hand. Time to find out who can play and who can’t. John Mayberry Jr. was walking his way out the door when he got hot, clouding the picture. Nate Schierholtz, who knows if he can play since he got hurt...

Pregame: New York Mets (59-69) at Philadelphia Phillies (61-67)

The Mets take a TWO-GAME WINNING STREAK on the road with them as they begin their last big road trip of the season, a nine-gamer tonight at Citizens Bank Park against the rival Philadelphia Phillies. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. and the game can be seen on SNY or heard, as always, on WFAN 660AM. Join the conversation on Twitter by following @dailystache or yours truly...

Putting A Rough Weekend In Perspective

For the Washington Nationals, heading to Philadelphia this past weekend and being swept by the Phillies probably wasn’t something they considered likely. The Nats were facing Kyle Kendrick the first game, and though they had to match up against Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee the next two games, they put out Gio Gonzalez and Jordan Zimmermann against them. Sometimes, in a 162-game season...

Mets 3, Phillies 2

PHILADELPHIA -- Lucas Duda hit a go-ahead two-run homer and then preserved the lead with an excellent defensive play to back Matt Harvey and lift the New York Mets to a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Phillies on Wednesday night. Harvey (3-3) allowed two runs and six hits in 6 1-3 innings to help the Mets to their fourth straight victory and fifth consecutive win at Citizens Bank...
