AAA: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees
It took twelve innings, but Scranton/Wilkes-Barre finally knocked off Buffalo on Wednesday night by a score of 2-1 thanks mainly to Eduardo Nunez, who scored the eventual winning run. Nunez recorded his only hit of the day with a lead-off single in the 12th inning. After reaching base, Nunez would steal both second base and third base before scoring on a Francisco Cervelli sacrifice fly. Scranton’s only other run of the evening was scored by Kevin Russo, who came home on a fifth inning single by Chris Dickerson. Adam Warren turned in a great performance in the start, tossing five innings of shutout baseball before giving way to the bullpen. Chase Whitley gave up the only run, while Kelvin Perez extended his Triple-A scoreless innings streak to 9 2/3 with two innings pitched last night.
AA: Trenton Thunder
Dellin Betances started for the Thunder on Wednesday night, which should tell you all you need to know about the outcome. The Thunder were blown out of the water in the final game of their home series with Altoona, as they lost 14-2. Betances lasted just four innings while allowing five runs on five hits and three walks, which ballooned his August ERA to a whopping 10.23. Much like Andrew Brackman, it’s become just about time to admit that another one of the notorious “Killer B’s” has flamed out. Betances was far from the only problem on the mound yesterday though, as both Craig Heyer and Ryan Flannery gave up three runs each as well. Offensively, Trenton wasn’t able to do much at all. David Adams and Addison Maruszak turned in two hits and an RBI a piece.
High-A: Tampa Yankees
Tampa fell to Dunedin by a score of 12-2 on Wednesday as Shane Greene got lit up while failing to get out of the third inning. Greene has struggled mightily in August, recording an 0-3 record to go along with a 14.25 ERA. On Wednesday, he would allow more runs (9) than he recorded outs (8) on seven hits and three walks. Sean Black got hit just as hard after Greene left, allowing three more runs on five hits over 2 1/3 innings. Slade Heathcott and Tyler Austin pitched in three hits each, while Ramon Flores added two of his own, but it wasn’t enough to overcome Dunedin’s offensive outburst. Only Heathcott and Kyle Roller were able to bring runners home yesterday, with one RBI a piece.
Low-A: Charleston RiverDogs
Charleston came out on the losing end of a 5-4 game against West Virginia after surrendering a walk-off single with the bases loaded in the 9th inning. Bryan Mitchell, who has cooled off in the summer months after a hot start to the season, allowed four runs (three earned) in five innings of work, but did not factor into the decision. However, Charleston is now 0-4 in games started by Mitchell in the month of August. John Brebbia would be saddled with the loss after recording just one out in the ninth inning and allowing a run on three hits. The RiverDogs offense came primarily off the bat of Casey Stevenson, who was 2-for-4 with a three-run home run. The only other run was courtesy of Francisco Arcia.
