For six innings, Sergio Mitre shut down the White Sox, 13 on groundouts over that span -- and that from a fifth starter who entered the game with a 6.82 ERA.
Mitre has some defensive help as well. Alex Rodriguez on a diving stop in the fifth; Robinson Cano's athletic catch and throw in the sixth. Mark Teixeira nearly gloved Jim Thome's scorching one-hopper in the fifth inning, which became the only hit that Mitre and the Yanks allowed.
In the 7th, Brent Lillibridge had walked. Then A.J. Pierzynski hit a sharp line drive off Mitre, recovered to thorw him out but then had a large contusion that quickly swelled. He was pulled out the game. The Yanks did X-rays on him and that turned out negative. Girardi is not sure if Mitre will be able to make his next start, but he will throw a bullpen session on Monday.
Check out this quote from Ozzie Guillen regarding Mitre and Gaudin's one-hitter today:
“I’m embarrassed. I think that everyone in that locker room should be embarrassed. You have to start second-guessing yourself when you go out and have more errors than hits in a game. We have veteran players and I have respect for them and appreciate what they have done for me in the past, but this is Major League Baseball. We’re better than this. Right now it feels like we’re stealing money from Jerry (Reinsdorf). I’m stealing money from Jerry. The mountains only get higher every night.”
This from Yankees.com: "I'm not going to take credit away from New York," White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen said, after criticizing his own team following the game. "They've got great players out there."
Chad Gaudin took over and hurled 2 2/3 no-hit innings and struck out four.
THE OFFENSE:
The Yankees had their best game since scoring 20 runs in Fenway last week, pounding White Sox pitching for 10 runs and 14 hits. They scored four in the second and another four two innings laster to build up an 8-0 lead after four.
Derek Jeter picked up three more hits to move to within 13 hits of Lou Gehrig on the Yankees all-time hits list. Robinson Cano followed up his 10th inning walk-off homer yesterday with a three-hit game today. Alex Rodriguez picked up two hits, including his 23rd homer of the year, a solo shot of Sox reliever Tony Pena in the 8th.
A-Rod, Johnny Damon, Cano, and Jerry Hairston Jr. had two RBI each. And five Yankees had multi-hit games. Overall it was a great day for the Yanks in the Bronx.
