The 2013 MLB season has been flying by and it's hard to believe it's already the All-Star break. There have been a lot of surprises so far this season, from the Pittsburgh Pirates going into the break 19 games over .500, to Matt Harvey giving the Met fans hope for the future, to Chris Davis tying Reggie Jackson with 37 home runs in the first half. We have also seen a fair share of disappointments as well, like the Los Angeles Angels being 5 games under .500 despite having Mike Trout, Albert Pujols and Josh Hamilton in the same lineup, and the defending World Series champions, the San Francisco Giants being 8 games under .500 with their ace Matt Cain supporting a 5-6 record with a 5.06 ERA in 19 starts. It's fun to take a look back at what has happened in the first half of the season and give out meaningless awards to those who deserve it, IF the season was to end today. In the American LeagueMVP - Miguel Cabrera, Detroit TigersMiguel Cabrera was hands down the MVP in 2012 as he also won the triple crown, but this year he has some competition with Chris Davis. Cabrera is hitting .365 with a .458 OBP and has hit 30 home runs, while driving in 95 runs, and scoring another 73. He has also drawn 60 walks. Davis is hitting .315 with 37 home runs and 95 RBI. But the fact that Cabrera has an extra 50 points on his batting average and Davis does not even have a .400 OBP makes Cabrera the favorite hereRunner Up - Chris Davis, Baltimore OriolesCY Young - Max Scherzer, Detroit TigersMax Scherzer goes into the break with a 13-1 record with a 3.19 ERA. His 13 wins are tied for the most in all of baseball and ranks second in the MLB with 152 strikeouts in 129.2 innings. He has had 5 starts with 10 or more strikeouts. Scherzer has made 19 starts so far in 2013, and in those starts the Detroit Tigers are 15-4. His only loss came in his final start before the break. In a year where the ace of the Tigers staff, Justin Verlander does not have his best stuff, it's nice to see Scherzer step up and live up to his potential.Runner Up - Matt Moore, Tampa Bay RaysRookie of the Year - Jose Iglesias, Boston Red SoxThe 23 year old rookie has been a huge part of the Boston Red Sox success in the first half of the season. The Red Sox have the most wins in the Major Leagues as they are 58-39. Iglesias has stepped up and has played half of his games at third base and half of his games at shortstop, making only 2 errors. So not only does he have a great glove in the field, but Iglesias is hitting .367 with a .426 OBP with 10 doubles, 2 triples, 1 home run, 16 RBI and 26 runs scored. Through his first 150 at-bats, Iglesias had 60 hits, batting .400 and was only the 3rd player in Red Sox history to hit .400 through his first 150 at-bats. The other two guys were Ted Williams in 1941 and Manny Ramirez in 2001. They both had 62 hits in their first 150 at-bats.Runner up - Leonys Martin, Texas RangersManager of the Year - John Farrell, Boston Red SoxJust a year ago the Boston Red Sox finished dead last in the AL East Division as they went 69-93 under Bobby Valentine. Just a half a season later, the Red Sox are playing great baseball under John Farrell and lead the Major Leagues with 58 wins at the break. He's done a great job managing the bullpen, and it seems like the players really respect him as they enjoy playing for him.Bob Melvin, Oakland AthleticsIn the National LeagueMVP - Paul Goldschmidt, Arizona DiamondbacksPaul Goldschmidt is quickly turning into a superstar in this league. At the age of 25, the 6'4, 245 lbs first basemen is having a great season with a .313 average, 23 doubles, 21 home runs, 77 RBI and 60 runs. Despite his size, he also has above average speed and has stolen 9 bases. He is up towards the top in nearly every offensive category, as he ranks 6th in runs scored, 5th in hits, 4th in home runs, 1st in RBI, 4th in walks, 9th in average, 5th in OBP, 3rd in slugging, and 3rd in OPS. Goldschmidt is one of the main reasons the Diamondbacks are at the top of the NL West Division.Runner Up - Buster Posey, San Francisco GiantsCY Young - Clayton Kershaw, Los Angels DodgersClayton Kershaw has hands down been the best pitcher in all of baseball this season up to this point. You have to ignore his 8-6 record, because he can't control the run support he gets and how bad the bullpen has been. He has thrown 145.1 innings over 20 starts and has only allowed 97 hits and 35 walks as his WHIP is just 0.91 and he has 139 strikeouts. He has thrown three complete game, two of which were shutouts and the other he allowed 1 run. In 13 of his 20 starts, Kershaw has allowed 2 or less runs, and in 17 of 20 he has allowed 3 or less runs.Runner Up - Adam Wainwright, St. Louis CardinalsRookie of the Year - Shelby Miller, St. Louis CardinalsMiller's first 60 innings were brilliant, his last 40, not so much.  But the All-Star break is exactly what this kid needs.  He finished the 1st half with a 9-6 record and an ERA under 3.  The ERA will end up in the mid 3s somewhere but on a Cardinals team that provides plenty of run support, Miller could win 15-18 games striking out more than a batter per inning and as a rookie, that is a lock for the ROY.  The only thing that will prevent him from winning this award is an innings limit.Co-Runner up - Hyun-Jin Ryu & Yasiel Puig, Los Angels DodgersManager of the Year - Clint Hurdle, Pittsburgh PiratesThe Pirates are 56-37 at the Al-Star Break and are 32-18 are home.  This includes an entire month without A.J. Burnett.  Hurdle seems to get the best out of his guys and works especially well managing his pitching staff, which is 1st in team ERA and BAA & 2nd in WHIP.  This seems to be the year the Pirates finish better than .500 and show face in the MLB Postseason.Mike Matheny, St. Louis Cardinals
