Potentially unsurprising after being blown up in Double-A last night, Indians closer Chris Perez will not return to the team’s active roster on Friday as originally scheduled. In his second rehab outing, his first with Akron, Perez allowed five runs on three home runs in just one inning on Tuesday night. He struck out two batters, including the first hitter on just three pitchers. He also allowed a double and a single in the inning. Trenton’s Francisco Arcia’s homer occurred in his first-ever Double-A plate appearance. Matt Loede of 92.3 The Fan was the first to share the news on Twitter this afternoon that Perez would not return on Friday. In his tweet, Loede shared that Perez will throw a long toss on Wednesday, have Thursday off and then will throw a bullpen session on Friday. He will be re-evaluated after these next two steps. Later, several other Indians beat writers added more context to the news via manager Terry Francona. Tom Withers of the Associated Press shared first that Perez was dealing with “mechanical” issues in his rehab on Tuesday. Yet, Francona emphasized that there were no physical problems. Perez, 27, was initially placed on the disabled list on May 27 with shoulder soreness. He had allowed seven runs in just 2.2 IP over his final three appearances before heading to the DL, walking five batters against three strikeouts with a familiar three home runs. This is the closer’s first trip to the injury list in his career. There are currently seven relievers in the Cleveland bullpen: Vinnie Pestano, Joe Smith, Cody Allen, Nick Hagadone, Rich Hill, Bryan Shaw and Matt Albers. There are no indications yet on whether the team would re-expand to eight relievers on Perez’s return, or perhaps otherwise shift the pitching composition.
