Found February 11, 2013 on On The Way Home:
The Cleveland Indians had a busy weekend, adding two MLB veterans on minor league deals before reporting to camp. Jason Giambi was in the running to become the next manager for the Colorado Rockies earlier this winter, but after he lost out to Walt Weiss, he decided he wanted to continue his playing career, which he will have the chance to do with the Indians, and he’ll make $750K if he makes the Big League roster. Cleveland also agreed to terms with Daisuke Matsuzaka on a minor league deal with an invite to Major League Spring Training. Dice-K will make $1.5 million if he does make the roster, and is reunited with Terry Francona, who managed Matsuzaka during his time as Red Sox manager. To round out their busy weekend before pitchers and catchers report, we found out that Bretty Myers’ option for 2014 will vest in Cleveland if he throws 200 innings this season and passes at physical at the end of the season. Did you think Felix Hernandez‘s record-setting extension with the Mariners was all but a done deal? Not so fast. Despite throwing normally in the month leading up to the start of Spring Training, King Felix didn’t officially pass his physical yet due to an issue surrounding his pitching elbow, preventing his deal from being finalized. He will undergo another physical once he gets to Arizona, and there is optimism that the deal will eventually get done. The Dodgers are still making some moves in advance of camp starting, as they’re taking a flyer on Kevin Gregg with a minor league deal, including an invite to Big League camp. The Diamondbacks are also rounding out the rest of their roster, inviting Rod Barajas to camp on a minor league deal. The Cardinals agreed to terms with David Freese on a one-year/$3.15 million deal, wrapping up all of their potential arbitration cases. However, Freese said he has interest in being in St. Louis for the duration of his career, which remains to be seen, especially since they’ll have to deal with Adam Wainwright first, who becomes a free agent after this season. Reliever Darren O’Day and the Orioles also avoided arbitration, as they agreed on a two-year contract, worth $5.8 million. Baltimore has now settled three arbitration cases since Friday, first coming to terms with Jason Hammel and Jim Johnson before O’Day. Boston GM Ben Cherington hasn’t started extension talks with Dustin Pedrioia yet, but it looks like there are plans to at some point. Also, with the presence of Jarrod Saltalamacchia and David Ross on the Big League roster, catcher Ryan Lavarnway may be headed back down to Triple-A after camp is through. Francisco Liriano finally passed his physical to make his deal with the Pirates offical, but not without some interesting clauses to protect the team if he gets injured. Jon Garland is trying to make a comeback, as he signed a minor league deal to join the Mariners organization on Friday. Tim Dierkes of MLB Trade Rumors got a head start on the 2014 MLB free agent class, giving us his top ten potentially available players for next winter. The best part about today? Instead of having to continually count down the days to the start of Spring Training, the majority of teams are reporting today! Although there are two or three feet of snow on the ground (if you leave in New England), it still feels like Spring. Thanks for reading!
