The Boston Red Sox have completed a six player deal that will bring Joel Hanrahan to the team in exchange for Mark Melancon and prospects. It is a deal that was first reported last weekend, but has now been consummated and made official on Wednesday.
The Red Sox have made no secret that Hanrahan will serve as the team’s closer, and that there will be no competition between he and Andrew Bailey, who was the incumbent closer from last season, once he came back from a lengthy injury.
The official deal has the Red Sox acquiring Hanrahan and Brock Holt from the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Melancon, Yankory Pimentel, Jerry Sands and Ivan DeJesus. Melancon was acquired from the Houston Astros last offseason, but he failed to replicate the same success in Boston that he produced in Houston in 2011.
Pimentel and Sands were acquired by the Red Sox in the blockbuster trade with the Los Angeles Dodgers that helped Boston clear payroll by unloading Carl Crawford, Adrian Gonzalez and Josh Beckett. Their vacated salaries have led to the Red Sox acquiring Shane Victorino, Mike Napoli, Ryan Dempster and Johnny Gomes.
By trading for Hanrahan, the Red Sox are sending the message that they feel the can contend this season. The bullpen was a very weak aspect of the Red Sox game in 2012, but should be much more formidable in 2013. Having Bailey and Hanrahan at the back end of the bullpen should be enough to win Boston a few more games than last season, which often saw the bullpen implode with a lead late in games.
Bailey appeared in just 19 games for the Red Sox in his debut season in Boston with an injury. He pitched inconsistently in his short time, leading the team to announce right off the bat that this is not a battle for the closer’s job. Bailey will set up Hanrahan, and Boston will have to hope for the best.
Of course, you know what they say about hoping and wishing in one hand while doing something else in the other, and then waiting to see which one fills up first. That more or less sums up the Red Sox over the past couple of seasons.

The Boston Red Sox officially announced their acquisition of
Joel Hanrahan yesterday and named the veteran as their closer entering the 2013
season. Boston acquired Andrew Bailey last offseason, a player they expected to
be their closer of the future. It’s now unclear what the future holds for
Bailey, who will enter spring as the Red Sox setup man to Hanrahan, reports Jon...
The Red Sox have already nipped one problem in the bud.
Assistant general manager Brian O’Halloran said during a conference call Wednesday that the plan is for Joel Hanrahan to enter spring training as Boston’s closer. That puts an abrupt end to the debate as to whether the newly acquired Hanrahan or Andrew Bailey would pitch the ninth inning for the Red Sox this season.
The Red Sox officially acquired closer Joel Hanrahan from the Pirates on Wednesday in a six-player deal with Pittsburgh.
The Sox sent two of the players they acquired from the Dodgers in last summer’s salary dump — first baseman/outfielder Jerry Sands and infielder Ivan De Jesus — to Pittsburgh, along with pitchers Mark Melancon and Stolmy Pimental. In addition, the...
The long-rumored trade between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Boston Red Sox that would send Pirates closer Joel Hanrahan to Boston has been completed. Hanrahan and infielder Brock Holt will be sent to the Red Sox, and in return, Pittsburgh will receive pitcher Stolmy Pimental, reliever Mark Melancon, outfielder Jerry Sands, and shortstop Ivan DeJesus Jr.
In case you missed it...
The Pirates and Red Sox didn't waste much time after Christmas to get the Joel Hanrahan trade finalized, and the result isn't much different than what we were all speculating about back on December 23rd. We already knew the deal was going to involve Hanrahan going to the Red Sox with Jerry Sands, Stolmy Pimentel, and probably Mark Melancon coming to the Pirates. The teams...
Red Sox fans received a lot of hip joke material on Wednesday, as the club announced that it has acquired closer Joel Hanrahan and infielder Brock Holt from the Pirates in exchange for Mark Melancon, Stolmy Pimental, Jerry Sands and Ivan De Jesus.
The sooner we get all of the Steve Holt Arrested Development gags and Tommy Hanrahan Slap Shot puns out of the way, though, the sooner...
It's not quite a megadeal, but it's pretty big. Joel Hanrahan will become the Sox closer, and infielder Brock Holt (pictured) will join the team. Hanrahan is 31 and one of the National League's best closers. Holt is 24, and hit well last season, but only played 24 games.Gone are Jerry Sands, Mark Melancon, Stolmy Pimentel, and Ivan De Jesus. Sands and De Jesus were acquired...
The players going to Boston are Joel Hanrahan and Brock Holt. Two fan favorites. In fact it only seems like the Pirates trade fan favorites. Fan love means little to me. The Pirates will get Jerry Sands and Stolmy Pimentel. We covered that part of the trade earlier. The addition of Brock Holt to the [...]

After Jason Grilli was signed, we waited for the other shoe to drop with a Joel Hanrahan trade. Now that the Hanrahan trade is completed, we’re left waiting for another shoe to drop. One of the big returns in the deal was Jerry Sands, who joins a crowded corner outfield/first base situation. That crowded situation already...
The Red Sox certainly improved their bullpen this winter.
In addition to guys with closing experience like Andrew Bailey and Alfredo Aceves, the team added more live arms in Joel Hanrahan and Koji Uehara. That gives Boston one of the deepest bullpens in the American League, but is it the best?
The Boston Globe’s Peter Abraham think so, but his colleague Nick Cafardo disagrees,...
The biggest reason I’m OK with the Joel Hanrahan trade is the inclusion of reliever Mark Melancon. The other three guys are pretty big question marks, although I think Jerry Sands has a good chance of at least being decent in a platoon-ish role. Still, Melancon is just as (if not more) valuable than Hanrahan in my eyes, largely because he’s under team control through 2016 and...
The Pirates completed a trade on Wednesday that sent Joel Hanrahan and Brock Holt to the Red Sox for Mark Melancon, Jerry Sands, Stolmy Pimentel and Ivan De Jesus. The deal increases organizational depth for the Pirates and gives them a solid reliever in Melancon. The deal also effectively makes Jason Grilli the new Pirates closer. Grilli, who was recently re-signed to a very affordable...
