The Boston Red Sox are still hopeful to work out a contract with Mike Napoli, as long as the two sides can come to an agreement on how the language will read in terms of Napoli’s injured hip, but they are also keeping tabs on Adam LaRoche in case the deal with Napoli falls apart.
Napli’s hip injury is the biggest issue holding up the deal as of now, with a three year contract worth $39 million already being in place. That part has been agreed to for quite some time, but Boston wants to protect itself in case Napoli’s hip issue turns out to be a bigger problem in the future. The Red So have put similar language in the contracts of J.D. Drew and John Lackey in the past, as they do not wish to be on the hook for a contract of a player who is damaged goods before the deal expires.
Ultimately, the Red Sox will likely not have to alter the number of years or the dollar amount of the contract with Napoli, but will just look for protection in case the hip injury turns out to plague the firs...

Boston Red Sox continue confusing offseason
Today the Boston Red Sox finalized their one-year, $9.5M deal with shortstop Stephen Drew. Forgetting for a moment the painful memories dredged up by having a Drew on the roster, this is yet another strange acquisition. While Drew has some lingering upside, he’s clearly not the high-end player many thought he’d become. Nor is $9.5M chump change. As they did with Shane...

Daniel Bard Says He Has ‘A Lot to Prove,’ Isn’t Thinking About Role With Red Sox After Joel Hanrahan Trade
Buried in the news that the Red Sox had acquired yet another closer in dealing for Pittsburgh’s Joel Hanrahan was the knowledge that a one-time closer-in-training still waits in the Boston system.
That’s because Daniel Bard, who was once considered likely to take the ninth-inning reins from Jonathan Papelbon, is far from major league dominance after a mess of a season. Bard was...

Signing LaRoche A Bad Idea For Red Sox
Rumor has it that the Boston Red Sox are currently in discussions with free agent first basemen Adam LaRoche. In light of the state of the franchise, the other teams in the AL East, and the other additions the Sox made this winter, this is a bad idea.
To figure out why this is a bad move, we need to start at last season. Boston lost more than 90 games this season for the first...
Red Sox quietly have fortified bullpen
The Baltimore Orioles rode a historic performance from their bullpen to the postseason. Let's just say the Boston Red Sox were inspired. While much attention has been paid to the various free agent signings throughout the lineup (Shane Victorino, Stephen Drew, Jonny Gomes, et al.) and in the rotation (Ryan Dempster), the Red Sox also have quietly bolstered one of the few...
Sox Looking at Adam LaRoche
