It appears that first-year Cleveland Indians manager Terry Francona is reaching back to his past while trying to assemble a roster for the Indians 2013 season. Reports have surfaced this afternoon that Cleveland has signed former Boston Red Sox SP Daisuke Matsuzaka to a minor league contract and he will be invited to spring training.
The initial reports suggest that the player known as Dice-K will earn $1.5 million if he makes the opening day roster and could earn as much as $4 million if he stays with the club while reaching several incentives in his contract.
Even though there are some opening in the Indians rotation, nothing is guaranteed to Matsuzaka, who was once highly touted by the Red Sox. He garnered little interest from other clubs as a free agent and posted a horrendous 8.28 ERA in just 11 starts last season with Boston. That was money well spent years ago.
The right-hander will likely start the season out with the Cleveland AAA affiliate.
