Jerry Crasnick of ESPN is reporting that MLB has suspended umpire Bob Davidson for one game due to his "sub-standard situation handling". I can't ever think of something like this happening, so it's a relatively landmark decision. Davidson will sit out tonight's game between the Twins and Brewers, and will be replaced with a callup from the minor leagues.

Ken Rosenthal recently released a video detailing how MLB goes about disciplining umpires, stating that suspensions were announced by the league, while fines were not. Rosenthal also indicates that umpires aren't disciplined for blown calls, just like players aren't disciplined for having a bad game. The discipline comes into play when they're unprofessional, such as when Davidson baited Phillies manager Charlie Manuel into a confrontation on Tuesday.

Even if this is just one suspension for one game for one umpire, it's a step in the right direction for MLB, which seems to have an issue with umpires drawing attention to themselves as if fans are coming to the park to see them. Hopefully, this suspension will lead to more scrutiny of the umpires by MLB, and they'll take more of a backseat to the players on the field, and just make the correct calls.
