Two weeks in a baseball season doesn’t seem like a long time, but, for the Seattle Mariners these last two weeks have seemed like a lifetime. On July 5th, the Mariners took the second game of the series from Oakland to claw back up to .500 at 43-43 and pull within 2.5 games of the division leading Rangers. Seattle hasn’t won since, a MLB-season high losing streak now up to 12 going into tonight’s game against Boston. What’s even worse is Texas has been red hot over this time period, opening up a 12.5 game lead.
They looked to be buyers, but Seattle will now most certainly be sellers. What’s the problem in Seattle? The old bugaboo from last season: offense. The pitching staff has been stellar; Seattle sent three pitchers to the All-Star Game in Felix Hernandez, Michael Pineda, and Brandon League.
