We've posted some pretty interesting moments from 2013 MLB spring training so far but this moment from last Tuesday's Los Angeles Angels/Milwaukee Brewers game might take the cake. In the first inning, home plate umpire Seth Buckminster was injured after a pitch thrown by Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Willie Peralta deflected off Angels slugger Albert Pujols and then hit Seth in the arm. Buckminister had to leave the game due to a broken hand and the umpiring crew had to wait for back-up umpire Anthony Johnson to dress in the appropriate home plate umpire gear. Instead of stopping the game to wait for Johnson, third-base umpire Tim McClelland decided to take over the ball and strike calling from behind the pitcher's mound:

Ump calls balls and strikes from near mound

During Tuesday's Angels-Brewers game, home plate umpire Seth Buckminster got hit in the hand with a pitch from Brewers pitcher Wily Peralta. The injury was apparently severe enough to force Buckminster to leave the game, and since there are typically only three umpires at Spring Training games, that turned into quite the issue. Third base umpire Tim McClelland then took up...

2013 Player Projection: Tommy Hanson

The Angels took a big gamble trading for Tommy Hanson in the off-season. The forgotten Angels: Chris Iannetta

The Angels preseason press is unequivocal. Mike Trout is the new Mickey Mantle. Pujols, Hamilton and Trumbo are the new Murderer’s Row. Weaver could be the new Verlander, if it wasn’t for the fact that, annoyingly, every year some guy called “Verlander” keeps being that. Spring training is winding up, and the Angels are a team of new promise. But one question remains...

As send 3B Parker to Brewers for RHP Byrd

The Milwaukee Brewers acquired third baseman Stephen Parker from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for right-handed pitcher Darren Byrd on Wednesday. Over four seasons in the minors, the 25-year-old Parker has batted .277 with 43 home runs and 262 RBIs in 448 games. His best season was 2010, when he batted .296 with 21 homers and 98 RBIs in 139 games at Class-A Stockton. The 26...

Angels 6, Indians 5

Tommy Hanson insisted he was OK and wanted to stay on the mound. The Los Angeles Angels took a different approach with their new starter. Hanson was pulled because of tightness in his right triceps as he warmed up for the fourth inning in Wednesday's 6-5 win over the Cleveland Indians. ''It's fine,'' Hanson said during the game. ''I think they just...

Rangers 10, Angels 9

Josh Hamilton knows there will be some boos when he returns to Arlington the first week of the season. If he performs the way he did during his first game against Texas on Thursday night, they will be well earned. Hamilton hit one of four home runs for Los Angeles in the top of the fourth inning off Derek Lowe, but the Angels lost 10-9 to the Rangers. ''The guys already...

Weaver, Hanson and the velocity that is (probably) never coming back

Leading up to the season we've heard a lot about lost velocity. Specifically, the velocity that Jered Weaver and Tommy Hanson lost over the last few years. There has been much hand-wringing over whether or not Jered and Tommy would be able to recover that velocity and if they don't, how they will adjust to life with a not-as-fast fastball. Mike Scioscia even went so far as...

Umpire Has to Call Balls, Strikes Behind Pitchers Mound During MLB Spring Training Game

Spring training turned into Little League for half an inning on Tuesday. After home plate umpire Seth Buckminster broke his hand on and errant pitch by Wily Peralta, the Angels-Brewers game was left without a home plate umpire. Anthony Johnson scurried to the back to change into home plate gear, and veteran umpires Tim McClelland and Jim Joyce decided to keep the game moving. That...

Balls and strikes called from mound after ump hurt

PHOENIX (AP) -- In a throwback to Little League days, balls and strikes were called from behind the pitcher's mound for a brief period in Tuesday's exhibition between the Los Angeles Angels and Milwaukee after an umpire was injured. Home plate Seth Buckminster was hurt with two outs in the top of first inning. Brewers starter Wily Peralta threw a pitch that hit Albert Pujols...
