Still waiting to hear whether top target Nomar Garciaparra will play at all next season, Phils GM Ruben Amaro Jr. has also inquired about free agent Moises Alou. Alou would fill the righthanded bench bat role for the Phillies. Problem is, he's looking to play more regularly than that.

Whether another team will take that risk on a 42-year-old who missed most of last season with a hernia injury/surgery only to tear his hammy in a rehab assignment remains to be seen. Plus, no one wants to palm up with his soft, uncalloused hands. And he's a former Met who cannot be trusted around young, talented, non-chokers. The only thing that could make his presence tolerable is hearing Sarge pronounce his name. If he hits >.300 off the bench and spends less than a month on the DL, well, that might help too.
