After getting swept by our “geographical rivals” the San Diego Padres, the Mariners did happen to finish the week off with a pair of wins over the San Francisco Giants at Safeco.
While the Mariners kept two of the games against the Padres close, we just weren’t able to get the job done. Something fans are getting a heavy dose of this year.
There were a few roster moves, a trip to the DL by Mike Carp, and the welcoming back of Franklin Gutierrez this week. But other than that, more of the same by the M’s.
With that, I give you my top 10!#10: Michael Saunders gets the shift
With the return of Franklin Gutierrez, the M’s Michael Saunders was probably thinking “great.” Saunders did a hell of a job in center while Guti was out.
But, with the injury to Mike Carp happening at the exact same time, left field became an open position for Seattle. And who better to fill that void than the man from B.C., Michael Saunders.#9: A busy Wednesday
Here is the full rundown of the roster moves made during the week. Eight of them to be exact.
Recalled were Franklin Gutierrez, Steve Delabar, Casper Wells, and Erasmo Ramirez.
Placed on the DL were Mike Carp, and Stephen Pryor.
Optioned down to AAA Tacoma Rainiers were Blake Beavan and Alex Liddi.
Kyle Seager needs your help in the All-Star voting!#8: Hope you didn’t buy a house Steve
After his call up on Wednesday, Steve Delabar was optioned back to the Rainiers on Saturday to make room for the call up of Oliver Perez.#7: Welcome Back Oliver
Oliver Perez has finally made it back up to the bigs!
After being out of the Major Leagues for the past two seasons with tendonitis, Perez has reached his goal once again as Major League pitcher.
Though I doubt he will start again, at least not for this franchise, it is still a feel good story to know that he made it back up after all of his hard work.#6: A warm welcome home for Lincecum
For the first time in his career, the San Francisco Giants, and the Northwests very own, Tim Lincecum pitched in Seattle.
Though probably not the outcome he would’ve liked for his hometown supporters, it was a nice victory for the M’s.#5: Millwood pushed back
After leaving the game early in his past start, the no-hitter against the Dodgers, Kevin Millwood is still eyeing his return to the mound.
Not all the way healed yet, the M’s pushed back his regular start to give him more time to heal.
Ichiro needs your help in the All-Star voting!#4: All-Star push has begun
With the annual All-Star game coming up, the Mariners players nominated need your help with the late ballot push.
Ichiro has the best shot at making the team in the voting category, though he does not deserve it in my opinion.
But as a fan, I am forwarding the message from the Mariners to you; Ichiro and Kyle Seager need help!#3: Swinging for a cause
As it goes in today’s sporting world, players and teams alike like to join in on charity events for a good cause.
On Monday, several members of the Mariners organization were at it again for the 27th annual Mariners Care Golf Tournament.
Here is a link to the video at mariners.com.#2: M’s just can’t put together a good streak
Missed opportunities, bad bounces, unlucky breaks, or whatever other cliche’s you can come up with, something has to change for this M’s ballclub.
We are young, but we are a lot more talented then our record shows. Injuries have plagued us, but have done the same thing for other teams as well.
The Padres series was a prime example of bad luck.#1: Guti is back!
Finally baseball just looks and feels right again in Seattle. Franklin Gutierrez is back from injury (hopefully for good), and Center Field is once again safe at Safeco Field.
Well there you have it kids, another week in the books, and another week full of basement baseball.
