Found March 06, 2013 on Mets Merized Online:
Good morning from Port St. Lucie, where there’s a chill in the air and the sun is just coming up. Had dinner last night with a friend on the Mets’ beat and like most people I speak with in the media he’s not enthusiastic about them having a good season. Drove around a little last night and this place has changed over the past few years. Really built up. New hotels and restaurants, including a sushi place not far from where I am staying. Walked into the lobby and three hotel staffers remembered me by name. Felt like Norm for Cheers. Was a good feeling. Heading to camp in a few minutes. David Wright is at the WBC and Johan Santana is still here from when I traveled with the team on a regular basis. Will make a run at Santana for obvious reasons, including a new one – the president of Venezuela died yesterday. Need to get a reaction from him. Ironically, the Mets are playing the Venezuelan team today. Also Ike Davis to see what he knows about being added to the WBC now that Mark Teixei...

Will Santana be traded even if the Mets are contenders?

This morning on Mets Today, it was discovered that the Mets’ club option on Johan Santana for 2014 will turn into a player option if Santana either wins his first National League Cy Young or pitches 215 innings this season. If one of those two admittedly unlikely events occurs, Santana could choose for the Mets to pay him $25 million in 2014, which would hamper the struggling franchise’s...

The Feeling Is That Almost No Chance Johan Avoids The DL

Things just keep getting worse and not better on the Johan Santana front. Andy Martino spoke to more than one team source and the consensus seems to be that Johan Santana will not be ready by Opening Day which totally wipes out Santana’s assertion that “he knows what he’s doing” and everything is okay. “I know the deal, spring training is for training okay!”. The Mets’...

Morning Update: Collins Concerned With Offense, Santana Making Progress, No Timetable For Murphy’s Return

Johan Santana will make his first Grapefruit League next Thursday, March 14, when the Mets play the Detroit Tigers, according to John Delcos of Metsmerized Online. That would leave three starts before the start to the season. Pitching coach Dan Warthen told Delcos that Santana is making progress after throwing a long-toss session on Monday and that notable gains have been made...

Communication Breakdown: Is Terry Collins In Charge Or Is Johan Santana?

What we have here is a failure to communicate. Or worse, a desire not to communicate. Apparently, unbeknownst to manager Terry Collins, his veteran left-hander Johan Santana threw off the mound Sunday when the Mets earlier indicated it could be at least ten days before he would do so.ESPN reported this dialogue: Collins: “What did you get on the mound for?” Santana: “Because...

Jeremy Hefner Wants To Be “The Man”

The latest on Johan Santana cane from manager Terry Collins who said that Johan Santana’s decision to throw a bullpen for the first time in 10 days, was “unnecessary” and said he “wished his ace handled himself differently.” Mike Kerwick of The Record quotes Collins who suggests that Santana needs to calm down and get his emotions in check, and that he should have gone...

Mets' Injury News: Kirk Nieuwenhuis, Johan Santana, Zack Wheeler

The New York Mets are getting close.  Can't you feel it?  They have toughed out the Bernie Madoff scandal, reduced payroll, and rebuilt the club.  They are probably not a contender this year, but the club is getting close to being good.  They just need to stay healthy. Here are your Mets injury notes: Kirk Nieuwenhuis suffered a knee injury yesterday in an attempted...

Mets Spring Wrap-up: Collins Not Worried About Santana, Cowgill Goes 3-for-4

This time, Terry Collins knew what Johan Santana was doing and seemingly both are on the same page, even though the left-hander was mum today on both his throwing and the death of Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez. After mugging with several friends on the Venezuelan WBC team, Santana long-tossed in the outfield, and followed that with several pitches off the mound from where...

The Fantasy Potential of Mets Players

With so much hype surrounding the likes of the Atlanta Braves, Washington Nationals and Philadelphia Phillies, the Mets appear to be, on paper, the fourth best team in the National League East this season. While the lack of team success might frustrate their fans, fantasy baseball owners will simply hope that their players will produce. There might not be top-end talent on this...

The Mets’ participation in the WBC, or lack thereof

The World Baseball Classic (WBC) is underway, with first round action completed in Fukuoka, Japan and Taichung, Taiwan. Cuba, Japan, Chinese Taipei and the Netherlands have advanced into the next round and there is much more excitement to come. Faces familiar to MLB fans such as Chien-Ming Wang, Andrelton Simmons, Roger Bernadina and Kazuo Matsui have made appearances on television...

2013 Mets – I Wanna Be In Pictures

Seriously? Don’t you guys and girls at MMO have anything better to do with your time? I thought we’d have a little fun last week, so I asked some of our writers to tell me what Hollywood Movies came to mind when asked to consider the 2013 Mets outfield, our starting rotation, David Wright, Sandy Alderson and Terry Collins. Some of the responses I got back were pretty hilarious...

Mets Matters: Gee Sparkles, Cowgill Impresses Me, Who’s Running The Show?

Some athletes will use anything as a motivator while others simply know what it takes to get ready. Today, pitching coach Dan Warthen tried to sell the idea Johan Santana used perceived criticism of his physical condition as the spark to get him on the mound for the first time since Feb. 19. Santana threw the day after GM Sandy Alderson said he didn’t think the soon-to-be 34...
