Bryce Brentz was on pace to participate in Spring Training with the Red Sox, but an early-January accident will delay the start of his 2013 baseball season.
Brentz shot himself in the leg while cleaning his shotgun, as first reported by WEEI.com. Ben Cherington confirmed the news while meeting with the media on Saturday.
The 24-year-old outfielder said the injury is “nothing serious” and that he expects to be ready for the start of the season. Cherington said that Brentz is “lucky.”
Brentz hit .290 split between Double-A Portland and Triple-A Pawtucket in 2012. He had 17 home runs, 76 RBIs and seven stolen bases. He is expected to start the 2013 season in Pawtucket.
Brentz was drafted in the first round of the 2010 MLB draft out of Middle Tennessee State. He is listed as the Red Sox’ No. 6 prospect on SoxProspects.com.
