At some point during today’s Cubs victory, Roobs was wondering how Nate Schierholtz did in San Francisco as a Giant because he was having a pretty good season so far.  Enter Wendy Thurm, who is a really smart lady and is a good follow on the Twitterz.  Nate was really just a part-time player on the Giants as well, but he was a solid contributor and as such he was awarded a World Series ring in 2010 for being on the postseason roster, as well as another in 2012 after his midseason trade to the Phillies for Hunter Pence. So far this season, up to today’s game, Nate has put up a 118 OPS+, which is pretty awesome.  He plays mostly against right-handed pitching as his platoon splits are “meh” at best against southpaws over his career.  Wendy Thurm had this to say on the Twitterz:   Player A: .288/.323/.529 with 5 HRs. Player B: .298/.335/.512 with 7 HRs.Player A -1 yr deal for $2.2 m.Player B -1 yr deal for $13.8 m — Wendy Thurm (@hangingsliders) May 18, 2013   Player A is Nate Schierholtz.Player B is Hunter Pence. — Wendy Thurm (@hangingsliders) May 18, 2013   The thing I pointed out to Wendy was that Nate is indeed a platoon player (only 14 plate appearances against LHP this season so far) while Hunter Pence plays every day.  Pence also doesn’t have a grotesque platoon split like Nate does this season, but we’re only a quarter of the way through so this may change.  However, this is consistent with Pence’s career production.  Nate hasn’t been absolutely horrible against LHP if you look at his career line, but over the past couple seasons he’s only been used as a platoon guy because the splits really are that bad.  So there’s that going for Pence and his large contract. Wendy makes a good point about the salary differences, and this is in no way shortchanging the Cubs for getting a good deal and also for Dale Sveum knowing how to maximize Nate Schierholtz’s production in situations where he is most likely to succeed.  But I felt like this should also be analyzed in the proper context.
