The Washington Nationals activated All-Star shortstop Ian Desmond from the 15-day disabled list and designated infielder Cesar Izturis for assignment. Desmond, out since July 22, missed the last 25 games with a left oblique strain. In 89 games this season the 26-year-old is batting .286 with 17 home runs, 53 RBI and 15 stolen bases. He ranked among the National League leaders in total bases, extra-base hits, doubles and homers when he was initially placed on the disabled list. The 32-year-old Izturis, claimed off waivers from Milwaukee on August 6, went 2 for 4 in five games with Washington this season. The Nationals, owners of the best record in major league baseball, open a three-game series Friday against the New York Mets.

Desmond will give Nationals the lineup they envisioned

With the expected return of shortstop Ian Desmond on Friday for the series opener against the New York Mets, the Washington Nationals will have their complete starting nine intact for one of the rare times this season. Desmond has been on the disabled list since July 22 with a left oblique strain but has taken part in early batting practice and full workouts this week in anticipation...

Nationals SS Desmond activated from DL

The Washington Nationals activated shortstop Ian Desmond from the 15-day disabled list and designated infielder Cesar Izturis for assignment, reported Friday. Desmond went on the DL July 22 because of a torn oblique. He took batting practice and infield drills at Nationals Park on Thursday. Desmond is batting .286 with 17 home runs and 53 RBI in 364 at-bats this season...

Bryce Harper to kids: 'Be as sexy as you can'

On Thursday, Washington Nationals rookie slugger Bryce Harper held a free one-day camp for aspiring baseball players between the ages of 6 and 14. The Bryce Harper Baseball Pro was held at Fairfax (Va.) High School and from the looks of it, a grand time was had by one and all. On top of the thrill [...]

This slightly pudgy Little League player is apparently Bryce Harper at 12 (pic)

Ha. Fantastic. Via Nationals Enquirer comes this delightful photo of a somewhat chubby boy who grew up to become Washington Nationals rookie phenom Bryce Harper. While it cannot be confirmed for certain that this photo is of a then-12-year-old Harper (which would make this from 2004 — Jesus, I’m old), it certainly looks like him, [...]

Bryce Harper gives unusual advice at youth baseball clinic (Video)

Washington Nationals rookie outfielder Bryce Harper held a free youth baseball clinic in Fairfax, Virginia on Thursday where he had some interesting (and unusual) advice for some of the future prospects in attendance: "Be as sexy as you can". We don't know exactly what Harper meant by that (and we would love to hear him explain this one), but we're pretty...

Mets-Nationals Preview

The Washington Nationals would love to keep their momentum going into a pivotal series next week, and a matchup with the New York Mets could help. So could the return of their All-Star shortstop. With Ian Desmond expected to come off the disabled list, the Nationals will try to add to their recent dominance of the Mets in Friday night's series opener in the nation's capital...

Making Sense of Pitch Counts

We’re a month and a half away from the start of the 2012 MLB Postseason and one of the most intriguing teams of the 2012 season, the Washington Nationals, are currently contemplating sitting their star pitcher Stephen Strasburg before the playoffs even start. Why are they thinking about making such a mind boggling move? Because their scared. Scared that if Strasburg throws too...

Nationals 6, Mets 4

Michael Morse hit a grand slam, Bryce Harper also homered and the Washington Nationals became the latest team to tag a struggling Johan Santana in their 6-4 victory over the New York Mets on Friday night. Ross Detwiler tossed six solid innings and the Nationals sent Santana to his fifth loss in the last five starts. Handed a 2-0 lead, the two-time Cy Young Award winner was perfect...

139 1/3

...but who's counting? Sounds like Davey Johnson is, for one. Here's Davey talking about Strasburg's sore back and trying to limit his innings as best he can with Shutdown Day looming during his postgame interview on Wednesday: "He's had that little bit of a stiff back. It looks like he kept trying to get his back loose. And he got in a jam, then he quite...

New York Mets (56-62) @ Washington Nationals (73-45)

If one of the last resorts of 2012 for the New York Mets is to play spoiler for the top half of the NL East, it would be nice to see the Washington Nationals go down in flames down the stretch. The Mets have three games to be obnoxious at the home stadium of the National League’s best.  Coming off a night where it was all about young star-in-the-making Matt Harvey, it will be...

Mets overcome Jackson, top Nationals 2-0

WASHINGTON -- The New York Mets struck out 15 times and finished with just three hits Saturday night. But baseball is a funny game sometimes: The Mets still came away with a victory. Ike Davis hit a two-run homer and Jon Niese threw 7 1/3 scoreless innings to help the New York Mets to a 2-0 victory over the Washington Nationals on Saturday night. The Mets (57-63) couldn't...
