Since the Washington Nationals played a doubleheader on Saturday, the club needed a spot starter for Tuesday’s tilt against the Chicago Cubs. They called upon former first round pick Ross Detwiler and he scratched his way through 5 1/3 innings to earn his first major league win since September 23rd of last year. The Nats won the second game of the series by a score of 3-2. Detwiler struck out a batter and didn’t walk anyone, a big improvement from his career mark of walking a batter nearly every two innings. The lefty worked on simplifying his mechanics in spring training and the results showed then and it was on display at Nationals Park. He took the place of reliever Collin Balester, who took a bullet for the bullpen on Sunday and pitched four innings. Balester was sent to Triple-A, but manager Davey Johnson expects to see him back in the majors really soon.
