There’s a lot going on with the Washington Nationals organization now with a winning ball club, Ryan Zimmerman’s injury with a still unknown timetable, and many other topics. Here are some quotes from Nats GM Mike Rizzo on a variety of topics from his interview at 11:30 this morning on 106.7 The Fan with Holden and Danny.

On bringing up Tyler Moore to fill in the hole in left field for the Nats: “I have to lay eyes on him to see how he handles left field…. We like the prospects of him being a National in the near future, but I’m not sure how near that future is.”

On if Henry Rodriguez has put distance between himself and Brad Lidge for the closer’s role: “That’s a question for Davey Johnson and Steve McCatty. I trust both [Rodriguez and Lidge] late in games….”

On Ryan Zimmerman’s shoulder injury and MRI: “We’re still not sure…. It could be a day, it could be a couple of days…. If it’s a couple of weeks we’ll obviously have to make a roster move, but I’m not going to get into any ifs or buts or anything…. We have plans in place for a lot of different scenarios.”

On Steve Lombardozzi: “Lombo, we still view him as a very, very good every day player…. We think his ceiling is extremely high.”

On Stephen Strasburg’s innings limit: “We’re gonna do what’s right by Stephen Strasburg. He’s a terrific, terrific young starter…. I wouldn’t be doing my job as caretaker…of this organization if I went and [abused] this pitcher for the long term. It’s going to be a tough decision; it’s going to be an unpopular decision… but those are the decisions that I have to make…. When he’s had enough in my opinion, we will shut him down for the benefit of Stephen Strasburg and the benefit of the Washington Nationals long term.”

On Chien-Ming Wang’s role when he returns: “We’re not going to go to a six-man rotation…. Let’s just see where Chien-Ming’s at” when he comes back.

As an aside, Rizzo and the hosts, Holden Kushner and Danny Rouhier, spent remarkably little time talking about Bryce Harper. I think this is a testament to where this organization is now compared to just a year or two ago. Before, all radio personalities were interested in were Bryce Harper, Stephen Strasburg, and Ryan Zimmerman. The current depth of the organization and the team’s success allows for a lot more interesting discourse about the team, which should make all Nats fans pretty happy.
